  • Episode 92: The Therapeutic Path of Humor (featuring Tom Farley)

“What’s the deal with humor?”  Laughter is the best medicine; and yet when it comes to addiction and recovery it is often seen as being defensive and noncompliant.  Why does the area of addiction and recovery discourage the use of humor?  Tom Farley is an author, motivational speaker, community relations coordinator, and our expert on the topic of comedy.  He joins this episode to talk about comedy and humor throughout his own journey, reasons why it’s often overlooked in therapy, the benefits we miss out on when we do not have laughter in our lives, and humor’s own path in addiction and recovery.

    About the Guest:

Tom Farley grew up in Madison, WI, and graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Marketing, later starting his career in banking and finance.

From 1999 to 2012, he ran the Chris Farley Foundation, a nationally recognized nonprofit that used humor-based programs to help young people build communication skills and supportive environments.

In 2008, he co-authored the New York Times bestseller The Chris Farley Show about his late brother, the comedian Chris Farley, and has since discussed addiction and recovery on major media platforms like The Today Show, Good Morning America, and Larry King Live.
