  • Recapping A Buffalo Christmas

On this final Talking Buffalo Podcast episode of 2020, Patrick Moran greets recurring guest and frenemy Joe from NYC (@BuffaloWins) and the two discuss—or more accurately argue over a barrage of topics centered around Buffalo, Covid and the Buffalo Bills.

After spending time discussing their respective Christmas trips back to hometown Buffalo, the attention is turned towards the Bills and the guys disagree over the significance of AFC East championship gear, the free agency value of Matt Milano, who they prefer the Bills to play in the first round of the playoffs starting next and end with a heated debate whether the Bills should play or rest their starters on Sunday against Miami with the second seed being clinched with a win on the line.

They do agree on a few things discussed, including Josh Allen being deserving of MVP and the undeniable impact Stefon Diggs has made, leading Patrick to consider calling him the best Bills receiver ever after just one season.

Happy New Year, everyone and thank you so much for listening.  We’ll be back to regularly scheduled Tuesday and Friday episodes starting next week.

  • Hanging Out With Joe Miller

On this holiday —-and quite different episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran hits the road in his hometown of Buffalo and hangs out with Overreaction Sports podcast host Joe Miller for a conversation taped in a church office in West Seneca of all places.

Joe’s previously been a guest on the podcast twice but this is the first time the guys have met in person.  They talk several Buffalo Bills and other life topics, including the crappy road trip Patrick just embarked on this past week and Joe having to accommodate the recording at his church because almost everything’s closed due to Covid.

Joe has takes on the Bills winning the AFC east for the first time in 25 years and how fans are feeling about this team. He has shares thoughts on the impact of fans potentially being allowed into the stadium for the playoffs and if he considers home field a legitimate advantage if just a portion of fans are permitted to attend.

They also spend time on several other topics, including Bills fans beefing with national haters, reaction to five Bills being named to the Pro Bowl team, power ranking who they’d like to see the Bills host in the first round of the playoffs, if they’d consider starters in Week 17 if the AFC second seed isn’t already locked up and so much more.

  • Jerry Ostroski, Former Buffalo Bills Star

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran chats with former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Jerry Ostroski on a wide variety of topics spanning his life and career.

Jerry talks about growing up in Pennsylvania not far from Philadelphia, active as a kid who played many sports including baseball, basketball and wrestling. The high school he attended included a few famous alumni, including legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Darryl Hall.  While there he became a star player and drew interest from several schools before ultimately making the decision to travel to Oklahoma and play his college ball at Tulsa.

There he became a three-year starter and an All-American as a senior, which afforded him the opportunity to be a part of Bob Hope’s annual Christmas special.  Jerry discusses that entire experience with Patrick.

In 1992 Jerry suffered the first of what would be several NFL disappointments when he was drafted by Kansas City, but not until the 10th round.  He was eventually cut by the Chiefs and later signed with the Atlanta Falcons but met the same fate.  Jerry explains why years later he considers Atlanta a mistake and what he was doing after that before the Buffalo Bills came calling.  Jerry eventually signed with the Bills on their practice squad in 1993 and remained there until around the middle of 1994, when he was elevated to the active roster, got a chance to play and would go on to start in 102 games for Buffalo between 1994-2001.

Jerry talks about his Bills career and some of the most influential people around him that helped shape the type of player he’d go on to become.  He admits that the Tennessee playoff loss in 2002 still bothers him to this day, his take on Doug Flutie not starting the game and much more, including the injury that ultimately ended his career.

We also catch up on what Jerry’s been up to since his playing days have ended, including being dad to  one college football playing son and a second coming soon. They end with the Fun Fact Finale, where we learn plenty of things about Jerry you probably didn’t know.

You can follow Jerry on Twitter @Ostroski_BigO

  • Josh Allen MVP Talk Is No Longer Premature

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran chats with recurring guest and buddy Joe (@BuffaloWins) on a bunch of topics centered around the Buffalo Bills defeating San Francisco on Monday Night Football in sexy fashion.

Josh Allen threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns for Buffalo on Monday night and in the process won admiration from plenty of fans and media nationally for his efforts. The guys break down his effort and determine why it’s now officially save to conclude Allen MVP talk for 2020 is no longer premature.

Allen’s statistical dominance this year has brought several comparisons to teams of the past and more specifically Jim Kelly.  Joe explains why he hates when fans and the media compare what Allen is doing this year to what Kelly did around three decades ago.

They also talk about the significance of Stefon Diggs to Allen and this entire offense, Cole Beasley being far more than what Joe thought he’d be with the Bills, the complete lack of a running game and if it matters, the defense bending but not breaking on the road and what the team should do about Levi Wallace, if anything.

Before wrapping up they take a look at the remaining month of the regular season and get into a debate whether the Bills should rest starters or play to win in Week 17 if the AFC East title or top overall seed for the playoffs isn’t on the line.

Joe also explains how he got suspended for Twitter, runs down some of the names that’ve blocked him there, discusses if he has any significant Christmas plans in this Covid era and reveals that he has less than zero interest in the NHL season reportedly ready to start in January.

  • Thomas Smith, Former Buffalo Bills Star

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has an interview with former Buffalo Bills first-round draft pick Thomas Smith spanning his life, career and what he’s up to nowadays.

Born and raised around farming in North Carolina, Thomas discusses his modest upbringing and introduction into football.  A cousin of former NBA star and Tar Heels college hoop legend Sam Perkins, Smith describes that relationship and also meeting Michael Jordan well before he became the best professional basketball player to ever live.

Thomas wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school for football and decided to walk on at the University of North Carolina.  It was a gamble that paid off handsomely, not only for him but the for the program as they went from a one-win team his first year to seven wins and a bowl game two years later. In the process Smith transformed himself into a big-time NFL prospect.  He talks about his college career as well as the process leading up to the NFL draft in 1993, including thinking that he was going to the San Francisco 49ers and his initial thoughts when Marv Levy called him to telling him he was being drafted by Buffalo, who had represented the AFC in the previous three Super Bowls.

Thomas discusses the transition into the NFL and although being on a perennial championship contender surrounded with future Hall of Fame players, he wasn’t at all intimidated.  Smith played primarily special teams but also some nickel defense his rookie season and the Bills would up going to their fourth straight Super Bowl.  Thomas shares his feelings on that entire experience as well in addition to his entire seven years in Buffalo as he made himself into one of the most underrated cornerbacks in the league.

He also talks about the Music City Miracle in Tennessee which turned out to be his last game as a Bill, why he signed with Chicago as a free agent in 2000, what made him decide it was time to retire and what he’s been up to since his playing days ended.

They finish with the traditional Fun Fact Finale and we learn many things about Thomas, including a hilarious tale involving Darryl Talley when Smith was a rookie.

  • Bills Talk Plus A Christmas Song Draft

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran has a chat with recurring guest Aaron Quinn from the Cover 1 Buffalo podcast to discuss takeaways from the Buffalo Bills latest victory as well as getting in the holiday spirit with a Christmas song draft.

It wasn’t easy but the Bills moved to 8-3 on the season by defeating the Los Angeles Chargers, 27-17. As Patrick states, the Bills were quite often their worst enemy but still managed to come away with a victory thanks in large part to a defense that seems to be turning the corner on the 2020 season.  The guys discuss several takeaways from the game including A.J. Klein continuing a transformation into a vital starter, Josh Allen having maybe his worst game of the season in Patrick’s opinion, getting the running back going and measuring the significance of being balanced on offense going forward.

The guys also hold a five-round Christmas song draft, with classics from all different eras on the table.  Patrick alternates between his childhood and the classics while Aaron stays true to his love of R&B music.

You can follow Aaron on Twitter @AaronQuinn716 and be sure to check out the Cover 1 Buffalo Podcast with Aaron and Greg Tompsett, twice weekly including a live Bills show following games.

Before the interview with Aaron, Patrick hits on the Mike Tyson/Roy Jones Jr. “fight” over the weekend and brags about having Jaret Patterson on his podcast just one day before the UB superstar ran for 409 yards and eight touchdowns against Bowling Green this past Saturday. • Jaret Patterson, UB Football Star

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with University at Buffalo star running back Jaret Patterson on a variety of topics spanning his life and football career to this point.

Jaret talks about growing up as an active child along with his twin brother James in Maryland.  He began playing football at seven years old and knew pretty early on that wanted to be a running back.  He became a star player at St. Vincent Pallotti high school, running for over 2,000 yards as a senior but despite his talent and success Jaret wasn’t recruited like a blue-chip prospect.  Jaret talks about the recruiting process and why he chose the University at Buffalo over Kent State.

He also talks about the adjustment of going from Maryland to Buffalo for college and what it’s meant to do it with his twin brother, who’s been a star player himself since being a youngster.

On the field Jaret Patterson made an instant impact at UB, rushing for more than 1,000 yards and winning MAC Freshman of the Year honors. In 2019 as a sophomore Patterson shattered the school record book, rushing for 1,799 yards and 23 touchdowns. He came into this season on several Heisman and Doak Walker watch lists and through three games in 2020 it’s evident why—highlighted by a school-record 301 rushing yards (along with four touchdowns) last week in a victory over Bowling Green.

Jaret also discusses his experience of playing in the Bahamas last year, his team and individual goals, his dream of playing in the NFL someday, favorite wing spots in Buffalo and a Fun Fact Finale highlighting tons of Jaret’s favorite things.
