Talking Buffalo episodes

  • Ryan Talbot, Bills Beat Reporter

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast it’s Buffalo Bills season preview time, and Patrick Moran is joined by NYup Bills beat reporter and SHOUT Buffalo football podcast co-host Ryan Talbot.

The guys go through the Bills roster positionally and determine where they are better, potentially worse or pretty much the same as last season.  This leads to specific discussions on Josh Allen, Devin Singletary, Cody Ford, A.J. Epenesa, AJ. Klein, Josh Norman and special team standouts among others.

Both guys also offer up several 2020 Bills/NFL season predictions, including League MVP, Coach of the Year, Breakout Star, Dud, Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year, Biggest Surprise and Flop teams, Conference Championship and ultimately Super Bowl predictions.   Spoiler alert: they disagree on this year’s Super Bowl champion pick.

They also spend some time talking about things they have in common, including wrestling and The Office as well as a discussion about Ryan’s career evolution and the successful podcast he’s teamed up with Matt Parrino to produce.

The guys also discuss Ryan’s slow but steady rise up the ladder with his coverage of the Bills, his growing popularity and credibility among both fans and peers and a detailed look at the successful podcast/vidcast he and Matt Parrino have been churning out.

Make sure to follow Ryan Talbot on Twitter @RyanTalbotBills, check out his written work at NYup.com and check out the SHOUT Buffalo Football Podcast with Ryan and co-host Matt Parrino wherever podcasts are found as well as YouTube.

  • Aaron Quinn, Cover 1 Buffalo

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran chats with recurring guest Aaron Quinn from the Cover 1 Buffalo podcast.  Aaron’s making his first appearance here of 2020 after being a regular (16 times) several times before that.

The guys talk about Aaron’s decision to leave Twitter, which turns into an in-depth discussion about the pitfalls of social media.  Aaron felt the excessive time spent on Twitter left him feeling toxic and and doing a poor job of having his priorities in order.   While acknowledging the good aspects of social media he points out the reasons that finally made him conclude he’s had enough, how he feels better mentally these days and other platforms he employs to keep up with getting his sports news and takes.

Of course, they also spend plenty of time talking about the Buffalo Bills on the heels of NFL cut down day.  Aaron details how pleased he is to see the Bills make a football decision rather than financial in retaining veteran defensive end Trent Murphy, as cutting him could’ve rolled over $7 million towards the 2021 salary cap.

They also discuss Isiah McKenzie making the roster, moving on from Robert Foster and Vosean Joseph, Jake Fromm in the mix, Tre White’s much deserved monster extension and much more.

Be sure to check out the Cover 1 Buffalo podcast with Aaron and Greg Tompsett, recorded live on YouTube and available after on all major podcasting platforms.

  • Sal Capaccio, WGR-550

On this milestone episode No. 250 of the future-award winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with the very first guest in the history of this podcast, Sal Capaccio of WGR-550 on a variety of Buffalo Bills and life topics as well as a fan-driven segment of “Ask Sal” that features one of the funnier anecdotes in the history of this podcast.

The guys start by discussing the podcast Sal did with Patrick at O’Neill’s in Orchard Park a little more than a year ago and how much life has changed for Sal both personally and professionally because of Covid-19.  Sal discusses just going out this week with friends socially for the first time in many months, confusion over hello and goodbye social protocols and the radical changes in how having to do with his job in 2020.

Patrick, a current and Sal a former Floridian both talk about living in the Sunshine state and Sal documents his 16-years down south before returning back to Western New York to pursue his radio career while Patrick openly admits he’s not a fan of living in Florida and badly misses Buffalo.

They also talk about the passing of Riverside high school legend Cliff Robinson, old school high school hoops in Buffalo, the Yankees and some 2020 Bills talk.

They finish with an extended segment of “Ask Sal” where fans from Facebook and Twitter submitted questions on a wide variety of topics and let’s just say Sal’s story involving an incident with ESPN radio is worth the listen alone!

Follow Sal on Twitter @SalSports and of course check out his excellent work covering the Bills among other things over at WGR-550.

  • Sal Maiorana, Rochester D&C Bills Beat Reporter

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with longtime Buffalo Bills beat reporter from the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Sal Maiorana on a variety of topics spanning the Buffalo Bills as well as life changes during these trying times and his personal website that combines news with nostalgia.

Sal recalls getting into the business all the way back in 1982 and covering the Buffalo Bills full-time for the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle beginning in 1990, the first of four consecutive Buffalo Super Bowl appearances.

The guys then get into a discussion on how much things have changed today because of Covid-19 with respect to how people in his profession have to do their job.  Sal reveals that after covering every game home and on the road for over 30 years, he’s only made the trek from Rochester to Buffalo for two training camp practices so far and that aside from the season opener he may not even be in the stadium for games this season. Sal also talks about the annoying if not impossible task of putting together unique content during these times because of incredibly restricted team access and in ability to talk to several people for a singular feature story.

They also talk baseball as both Patrick and Sal are lifelong Yankee fans and lament the fact that the top players continue to consistently be injured, prompting Sal to conclude the Yankees get more injured than most NFL teams.

Sal has a website dedicated to his historical content fans can opt-in on an email list that notifies of new content being posted.  He hits on a few of the stories and why all these years later the content still means so much to him. It’s easy to tell the site is a true passion project for him.

Of course, they spend time talking about the Bills and Sal has thoughts on Josh Allen, Matt Barkley, the cornerback position and why he thinks the Bills deserve to be considered not just the AFC east favorites but  legitimate Super Bowl contenders before ending by discussing a few new guys he’s eager to see in uniform this year.

It’s a cozy chat with one of the industries best old-school sports writers.

Follow Sal on Twitter @SalMaiorana and ask him how you can easily opt-in to get notifications of new posts on his website.  Also be sure to check out his work at the Rochester D&C covering the Bills.

  • Power Ranking Bills Drought Player Fits For 2020 Team

On today’s future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran partakes in an exercise of power ranking the top 15 former Buffalo Bills players from the drought era (2000-2016) that would be the best addition to the 2020 Buffalo Bills.

After prefacing, repeatedly that this isn’t necessarily a list of the best and most talented players during the 17-year playoff drought to start this century, Patrick counts down from 15 to the top spot of his list, with an emphasis on positions he considers bigger needs or at least spots that could use an upgrade. Making the list is one tight end, one running back, one receiver, three offensive linemen, three defensive linemen, four cornerbacks and two quarterbacks.

Some of the names and who’s placed where may shock you. This is Patrick’s first solo episode in quite a while.  Don’t get used to it though—next week is “Sal Week” on the podcast, with Sal Maiorana coming up next Tuesday and Sal Capaccio for a milestone 250th episode next Friday.

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by Buffalo Fanatics content creator Joe Miller for a discussion on both football as well as the process and potential problems with podcasting.

On the football end, Patrick gets Joe’s thoughts on Miami allowing at least some fans into Hard Rock Stadium for their week two home opener against the Buffalo Bills and Sean McDermott’s reaction to it as well as opinions on how sports have looked so far with no fans, Earl Thomas getting cut by Baltimore and Barstool Sports wanting to get involved in the Bills stadium naming process.

Joe also discusses the latest episode of his podcast and elaborates on his biggest worry when it comes to the Bills this season.

The guys also spend significant time talking podcasting, including a list of reasons even more people don’t listen to podcast and which of those reasons are valid versus perception and a segment about the potential pitfalls of podcasting.  If you have a podcast, enjoy podcasts or want to start your own podcast you’re definitely going to want to hear what Pat and Joe have to say.

  • YOUR Bold Buffalo Bills Predictions

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran turns control over to the listeners and they responded with a slew of Buffalo Bills 2020 bold predictions before discussing them with recurring guest Joe from NYC.

Via the TBP Twitter and Facebook pages fans were asked to chime in with their biggest bold predictions for players and the team this year and fans didn’t disappoint.   Patrick reads off a bunch of submissions and reacts to several, including forecasts for rookie running back Zack Moss as well as incumbent Devin Singletary, a bunch of thoughts on the wide receivers and of course, many (many) takes on quarterback Josh Allen as he heads into his third season as the Bills starter.

There’s also a handful of bold predictions about the team as a whole, ranging from Super Bowl champs to the unpopular but at least potential scenario the team gets caught up in its own hype and underperforms in 2020.

The guys end the episode discussing on whether Dave Portnoy’s expressed interest in Barstool Sports purchasing the naming rights for Bills Stadium has any legitimate change of succeeding.

  • Joe Yerdon, Sports Media Personality

On the episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, it’s a #HireJoeYerdon Friday as Patrick Moran is joined by hockey writer/sports personality to talk about a variety of Buffalo sports topics as well as NHL playoffs.

Showing he’s capable of talking about more than hockey, Joe has thoughts on the Buffalo Bills signing head coach Sean McDermott to a six-year extension, the significance of culture as well as Dion Dawkins also signing an extension and thoughts about guys playing out the final year of their contracts.

They also spend some time talking baseball on the heels of two Toronto Blue Jays games in Buffalo this week in addition to a candid discussion if Western New York would be able to support a MLB franchise.

Of course, hockey talk is still Joe’s go-to and Patrick tasks him with trying to sell a largely disgruntled Sabres fan base why it’s time to start being excited about the potential of the team going forward.

Joe also has thoughts on the NHL playoffs so far, a Stanley Cup prediction and much more.

  • Steve Mathes, Buffalo Fanatics

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by The Bills Guys podcast co-host Steve Mathes of the Buffalo Fanatics podcasting network for a conversation focused on the Buffalo Bills and Sabres.

Ed Oliver spoke to the media via a Zoom presser on Monday for the first time since originally being arrested in May and ultimately being cleared of any wrongdoing.  His comments were enlightening and interesting, ranging from his mindset at the of his arrest until now and how he feels about the justice system currently.  The guys play a few clips and react to comments, including Steve pointing out the frustration he’d feel if it were him and Patrick admitting that he prejudged Oliver as guilty of a few months ago without knowing all the evidence.

They also discuss the possibility of the NFL potentially playing regular Saturday and perhaps even Friday nights game this season with the growing probability that they’ll be no college football this fall, with both agreeing it will be good for fans but a struggle with schematics not to mention most players probably hating the idea.

They also spend some time talking Sabres, including a hyped official Sabres award series on social media that produced just three on-ice awards.  One of them went to Kyle Okposo and the guys have  strong takes on that and a few more awards that should’ve been handed out as well as reaction to the New York Rangers winning the NHL draft lottery on Monday night.

They wrap up by spending a few minutes talking about the Toronto Blue Jays starting to play some home games at Sahlen’s field beginning this week.

You can follow Steve on Twitter @JudgeMathes and be sure to check out The Bills Guys alongside co-host David Tilton on both Mondays and Thursdays.

Before talking to Steve, Patrick speaks of the anxiety that’s been plaguing him personally over the potential of high school football in Florida getting cancelled and the strong possibility that in-person school won’t have sustainability anywhere.  He also reveals to Steve that he’s been working on a monster-sized quiz of his favorite TV show ever, The Office.
