  • Cristina Chillem: The Exit Interview
It’s bittersweet day at Talking Catholic, one of our favorite guests and colleagues is leaving Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden for bigger things. Over the last 5 years, Cristina Chillem has gone from a volunteer straight out of college to an expert grant writer and program director overseeing the Health and Wellness initiative in Salem County. She’s moving on to take the reigns of another organization in Salem County as executive director, but before she goes, Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh sit down with her to discuss her time at Catholic Charities, what she’s learned and what she’ll be taking with her to the new job. We’ll miss her greatly, but we’re thrilled she’ll be bringing the tenets of Catholic Charities to a new population!

  • Emergency Pro-Life Crossover Podcast
With big legislative news in New Jersey having been announced today, we decided to bring you an emergency crossover Talking Catholic and Am I Not Here podcast to bring everyone up to speed on the details. Joining Am I Not Here host Tara Smith and Talking Catholic host Mike Walsh is the New Jersey Catholic Conference executive director James King and Jennifer Ruggiero, head of the Secretariat for Family and Pastoral Life for the Diocese of Metuchen.
The New Jersey State Senate and General Assembly have this week released from committees two bills, S49 & A6260, that would codify and, potentially, expand access to abortion in the state. Jim and Jennifer discuss the intricacies of the bills and what all Catholics and New Jerseyans can do to make their opposition heard by state politicians. The bills are expected to be voted on no later than Monday, January 10. To learn more about these bills and to notify your representative, go to: https://njcatholic.org/faith-in-action.
We also discuss on the show today several other pro-life concerns at both the state and federal level.

  • Talking Saints - John Neumann
Talking Saints kicks off the New Year with a discussion on this month’s Saint, John Neumann.  Hosts Laurie and Pete dive into the life of this 19th century Bohemia-born Redemptorist and American bishop, who built more than 90 churches and established the first Catholic diocesan school system in the United States.  This missionary can teach all how to courageously serve the Lord, no matter where the journey takes us.  Saint John Neumann, patron saint of immigrants and educators, pray for us!

  • Am I Not Here/Talking Catholic podcast crossover #2
It’s our second annual crossover episode where we welcome back the hosts of one of our favorite podcasts, Am I Not Here.
Tara Smith and Jerry Wutkowski – the director and associate director of communications for the Diocese of Metuchen. The duo join us in studio to chat about what we did in 2021 and what we have planned in 2022. Our own host Jen Mauro did her best to keep the podcast on track but co-host Mike Walsh may have had one or two epic rants that yanked back the curtain on what it’s like to be a Catholic communicator. Spoiler alert: Jerry asks for prayers. December is a busy month :)

  • Talking Saints - Francis Xavier
“It is not the actual physical exertion that counts towards one’s progress, nor the nature of the task, but by the spirit of faith with which it is undertaken.”
Today the Catholic Church remembers the example of Saint Francis Xavier, prolific missionary and one of the first members of the Society of Jesus.  On this his feast day, Talking Saints’ Laurie and Pete reflect on the miles he traveled, his “creative evangelization,” and his fearless faith in following God’s call.
The hosts also conclude this Year of Saint Joseph with the final Litany to the head of the Holy Family, which can be found at https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/litanies/litany-of-saint-joseph
Saint Francis Xavier, Patron of Missionaries, pray for us!

  • Taizé Prayer with Josemon Abraham
Advent begins this week so we thought we’d bring you a unique perspective on prayer. We’re joined by Josemon Abraham, a devotee of Taizé Prayer - a style of meditative prayer developed by an ecumenical community of monks in rural France, which had it’s start in the 1940’s. Josemon gives us a thorough history of the Taizé community, its distinctive prayer style and how it has become beloved by so many Christians around the world, especially young adults. Our co-host Kari Janisse was exposed to it several years ago and was thoroughly impressed, even our jaded and prayer-deficient co-host Mike Walsh enjoyed it.
The prayer time typically includes a few songs, a psalm, a Bible reading, time of silence and intercessions. Short songs (chants), sung repeatedly, give it a meditative character. The words and phrases used in these chants are taken from the Holy Bible or writings of saints. Meditative singing thus becomes a way of listening to God. It allows everyone to take part in a time of prayer together and to remain together in attentive waiting on God. Please check our parish website for more information.
If you are interested in the Taize experience, all are welcome to join Josemon as he leads a prayer event at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 32 Carroll Ave., Williamstown, NJ on Tuesday, December 7th from 7-8 PM in the parish’s St. Anne's room.

  • Vocations with Fr. Adam Cichoski
Earlier this month, the Catholic Church dedicated a week to promoting vocations in the United States. It’s a topic we never want to miss, so we bring you a belated but brilliant conversation featuring one of our favorite guests, Fr. Adam Cichoski, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Camden. Fr. Adam is always a delight and our hosts Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh had a blast chatting with him.
