  • Talking Saints - Margaret of Scotland
On this feast of Saint Margaret of Scotland, Talking Saints hosts Laurie and Pete dive into the life of this 11th century model of charity and the domestic church.  An English princess born in Hungary, this saint married King Malcolm Canmore III of Scotland at the age of 25.  Her work to help the poor, correct Catholic abuses, care for her husband and eight children, and her holiness earned her the title “Pearl of Scotland” from those around her.

Saint Margaret of Scotland, Patroness of Scotland, pray for us!
Our hosts, as well, in this Year of Saint Joseph, continue the recitation of “The Litany of Saint Joseph,” which can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/litanies/litany-of-saint-joseph

  • Discover Catholic Schools Week 2021
We may be a little biased, but we think Catholic schools are consistently the best option for most families. They provide excellent academics, dedicated faculty, and a deeper connection to our faith. With those thoughts in mind, we brought in some guests that live this values every day. Joining hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh today are are educators Dr. Janice DeCicco Fipp, principal at St. Joseph Regional School in Somers Point, NJ; Tom Iacovone, Jr., principal at Gloucester Catholic Junior and Senior High School in Gloucester City, NJ; Patricia Naples, middles school science teacher at Assumption Regional School in Gallaway, NJ; and the new Communications and Marketing Manager for the Diocese of Camden’s Office of Catholic Schools, Michael Bress. It is a wonderful conversation about the guests’ educational paths, the benefits of Catholic school education, and how you can discover more about South Jersey Catholic schools.

  • The power of the pilgrimage
This week we’re talking pilgrimages, both local and international. Our guests this week include pilgrimage guru Fr. Robert Hughes, vicar general for the diocese of Camden, and listener favorite Donna Ottaviano-Britt who famously had her professional life forever changed thanks to a pilgrimage. The two chat with hosts Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh about what differentiates a pilgrimage from a trip/vacation, the intense spirituality but also joyful camaraderies they’ve witnessed on pilgrimages and promo some of the upcoming pilgrimages Fr. Hughes is hosting (the Holy Land & Italy, Ireland, Germany, Alaska and Turkey & Greece).

  • Working for the Church
We don’t often think about the professionals working for the Church, but in every diocese in the world professionals work every day to keep the lights on, provide services, handle the accounting, staff the schools, and a myriad of other blue-collar and white-collar jobs. With that in mind we brought a few of our favorite people together to chat, both in terms of why they work for the Church and who they look to hire. Joining hosts Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh today are Diocese of Camden professionals Karen Fisher, manager of parish-based senior programs for VITALity Catholic Healthcare Services; Kevin Hickey, executive director of Catholic Charities; and Dr. Bill Watson, Superintendent of Schools. It’s a great conversation on the personal, professional and spiritual fulfillment that can be found working for our faith.
If you are interested in joining us, check out our job listings at https://camdendiocese.org/employment or attend our diocesan job fair on Nov. 10 from 3-7 PM at St. Mary’s Parish, 2001 Springdale Road, Cherry Hill, NJ.

  • Talking Saints - Pope John Paul II
“Open wide the doors to Christ.”
With these words, Pope John Paul II began his pontificate in 1978, and in the next three decades, he sought to show the masses how to embrace a life for Jesus.  In the latest Talking Saints, Laurie and Pete share the life and teachings of a Saint who wasn’t afraid to reveal his own joys and sufferings, on mission of a “springtime of evangelization” to bring God’s love to all hearts and minds.
Our hosts, as well, in this Year of Saint Joseph, continue the recitation of “The Litany of Saint Joseph,” which can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/litanies/litany-of-saint-joseph

  • Synod Chat with Mike Canaris and Donna Ottaviano-Britt
This week, across the globe, dioceses began the process that will result in the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in 2023. This two-year worldwide conversation begins in the local church and will methodically move it’s way from parishes, to deaneries, to ecclesiastical provinces, to national conferences, and finally to the Vatican. To discuss this unique effort we brought back our resident Vatican watcher, Catholic Star Herald columnist and professor at Loyola University Chicago’s Institute of Pastoral Studies, Michael Canaris, Ph.D.. He gives us an insight into Pope Francis’ perspective on the Synod. Also joining him, and hosts Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh, is pod favorite Donna Ottaviano-Britt, who heads the Diocese of Camden’s Secretariat for Pastoral Outreach. Donna gives us a glimpse of what the Synod will look like at the local level.
If you want to learn more about the Synod, in a very understandable way, we recommend Fr. Robert Hughes’s recent column in the Catholic Star Herald: https://catholicstarherald.org/communion-participation-and-mission-a-synod-begins/

  • Jose Rodriguez returns… again
It’s been an incredibly busy few weeks in Catholic world, so Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh brought in someone working at least as much as they are to talk shop - Jose Rodrigues, the Director of Family and Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Camden. As Catholic world is in full-swing again, the trio talk about a recent, hugely successful catechist event, an upcoming Synod event that will feature the awarding of Bishop Dennis Sullivan’s first Bishop’s Medal to parishioners and staff in South Jersey, and Jose’s own upcoming nuptials! (Producer’s note: to Jose’s fiancée Star, you are welcome on the podcast anytime to offer rebuttal.) Mike also publicly announces his favorite of the six Talking Catholic YouTube shows (no chance that causes any rifts…)

  • Fr. Rene Canales and Helen Persing - Hispanic Heritage Month
At the midpoint of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh chat with two favorite returning guests, Fr. Rene Canales, pastor, Our Lady of Guaduple Parish Shrine, Lindenwold, NJ and Helen Persing, principal, Saint John Paul II Elementary School, Stratford, NJ. Fr. Canales and Mrs. Persing have been working together as pastor and principal for only a year, but their individual work with Hispanic populations has been at the forefront of their daily lives for many years. On today’s show, we discuss the uniqueness of the many Latino cultures living in the South Jersey region and the benefits that are discovered when they are welcomed into our parish and school communities.
Fr. Canales has his own story as well, which we didn’t get to chat with him about on the podcast, but should not be missed as he became a U.S. citizen only a few short years ago. Read about it here: https://catholicstarherald.org/father-canales-embraced-by-the-nation-he-has-come-to-love/
