  • Talking Relics with Deacon Jim Hallman
This week we welcome back a favorite guest, Deacon Jim Hallman, of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Williamstown, NJ. He discusses with hosts Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh an upcoming presentation at his parish featuring more than 150 relics of Catholic saints, including relics of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. Throughout history, many lives have been forever changed thanks to being in the presence of relics. The trio discuss several famous relic interactions, as well as their own personal moments in the presence of relics.

This presentation on sacred relics, led by Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross, will be offered on September 23rd at Our Lady of Peace Parish at 6:30 PM. Those in attendance will be able to examine and venerate each relic.

  • Talking Saints - Catherine of Genoa
Even when we experience disappointment and suffering, God is making a joyful life for us.  Caterina Fieschi’s desired life of entering the convent turned into a married life of spousal infidelity and financial ruin, but the Genoese woman soon understood God’s greater plan for her, after a transformative night in confession.  Hear the story of the saint we now call Catherine of Genoa on the latest Talking Saints today, Sept. 15, her feast day.
As well, hosts Laurie and Pete continue the Litany of Saint Joseph.  Follow along by finding the prayer at https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/litanies/litany-of-saint-joseph
Saint Catherine of Genoa, Patron of Brides and Temptations, pray for us!
P.S. This day is doubly blessed, as it is also the birthday of co-host Laurie!  The Talking Saints team wishes a fantastic day and many more to a joyful and inspiring friend! Send Laurie some birthday blessings in the comments!

  • Hostful Fall 2021
This week we bring in 4 of our 5 co-hosts for a chat about what we are focusing on for Fall 2021 in the Catholic Church. Mike Walsh, Kari Janisse, Marianela Nunez and Jennifer Mauro discuss the opening of another youth ministry year and school year, as well as diocesan and Vatican news. It’s a great chat with a lot of things we should be excited about in the Church as we move into Autumn.

  • Back To School 2021/2022
After a little well-deserved R&R, our hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh return to the podcast with a Back to School episode featuring one of our favorite guests Dr. Bill Watson, Secretary for Catholic Education and Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Camden. The trio talk about the successes achieved by the 30+ schools in the Diocese of Camden last year as they opened for 5-day-a-week in-school learning and how the schools are preparing for the new school year as veterans of pandemic-times education. We also chat a little bit about how the curriculum of Catholic Schools, as well as parish-based religious education programs, provide tools for students that can't be found in any other educational venue. To learn more about these education opportunities, go to: SouthJerseyCatholicSchools.org

  • Bryan and Karen Grant, Doo-Wop Drive In
As summer is drawing to a close, hosts Mike Walsh and Kari Janisse took a little trip there not to catch some rays, but to eat some good food and enjoy a great chat with two of the co-owners of the Doo-Wop Drive-In Restaurant in Wildwood Crest: Bryan and Karen Grant, parishioners of Our Lady of Peace Parish, in Williamstown, NJ. We chat not only about their AMAZING food (creations of their fellow co-owners Jason and Kim Kramer) but also their faith and Karen's conversion to Catholicism.
You can check out their menu and specials at http://doowopdrivein.com or take a look at their gorgeous food platters on Instagram or facebook at @doowopdrivein.
[Producers note: this was recorded in an office above the restaurant, so there is some ambient noise throughout that we tried to minimize as best we could.]

  • Molly and Mike Bedics
We FINALLY got on the show two of our most requested podcast guests, Molly & Mike Bedics. While they may not be recognizable by name, for anyone who was watching Bishop Dennis Sullivan’s live-streamed Sunday Masses during the height of the pandemic, they became local celebrities. The married duo provided the music during these Masses and comment after comment on the broadcasts praised their singing for the joy it brought people during those dark times. Today, our hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh dive a little deeper into their lives, chatting about Mike’s role as the Director of the Office of Worship and Christian Initiation for the Diocese of Camden and Molly’s role as a special education teacher, their family life, and their how they spend their downtime.

  • Talking Saints - Deacon Lawrence
“It is well done.  Turn me over!”
Lying on a hot gridiron, on the brink of death, Saint Lawrence kept his sense of joy and humor to the last, knowing his martyrdom would bring him to the glory that he longed for.
On the feast of this 3rd century Deacon, Talking Saints hosts Laurie and Pete share the life and death of a holy man who inspired the early Catholic Church, and continues to motivate others to live fearlessly.
    Saint Lawrence, pray for us!
Our hosts, as well, in this Year of Saint Joseph, continue the recitation of “The Litany of Saint Joseph,” which can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/litanies/litany-of-saint-joseph

  • Professor Michael Canaris returns
It’s been a busy Vatican Summer and with a full Vatican Autumn looming. With this in mind we asked noted Catholic Star Herald columnist and professor at Loyola University Chicago’s Institute of Pastoral Studies, Michael Canaris, Ph.D., to join us on the podcast to do a deep dive on a few topics. First up, hosts Jennifer Mauro and Mike Walsh chat with Mike about Pope Francis’ July 16th letter “Traditionis Custodes” (Guardians of the Tradition), declaring the liturgical books promulgated after the Second Vatican Council to be “the unique expression of the ‘lex orandi‘ (law of worship) of the Roman Rite” and what the pontiff was likely considering with it’s release. We also have a short conversation about the upcoming worldwide Synod beginning in October (don’t worry, that topic will get a full episode later this year) and we chat about a few of Mike’s recent Catholic Star Herald columns.
If you would like to read more from Dr. Canaris, check out all his columns here: https://catholicstarherald.org/author/michael-m-canaris

  • Jennifer Mauro
On today’s episode our hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh introduce you to the new managing editor of The Catholic Star Herald, Jennifer Mauro. The official newspaper of the Diocese of Camden has seen its first change in leadership in 26 years as the former managing editor Carl Peters retired in July after 32 years at the paper. Mary and Mike give Carl a proper sendoff and then chat with Jen on her path from secular journalism to Catholic journalism.

  • Summer in the City 2021
In another sign of the return of normalcy, we’re thrilled to be talking about the Summer in the City youth program returning in-person this August! Joining our hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh are the Director of Youth, Young Adult and Campus Ministries for the Diocese of Camden, Jose Rodriguez, and former Summer in the City participant and current junior counselor Yen Nguyen.
SITC is a week–long immersion project where the participant is given the opportunity to live and work the gospel of service and social justice through the gift of self. The combination of service at multiple work sites and spiritual reflection sessions gives young people the chance to use their talents and abilities to help their neighbor, and increase their awareness and understanding of the importance of the rights and dignity of the human person.
Participation is open to any student who is entering or in high school. To learn more about this great week and to register, go to: https://camdendiocese.org/youth-ministries/summer-in-the-city
