  • A roundup of Catholic news and Katie Comerford-Rivera returns
As the world slowly seems to be getting back to normal, so does the world of Catholic news. Our solo host today, Mike Walsh, updates us about the installation of the Knights of Columbus New Jersey State Council, pro-life advocacy efforts, the upcoming World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, and a column series from Bishop Dennis Sullivan highlighting his 50 years as a priest.
Then Mike welcomes back to the show one of our favorite guests, Katie Comerford-Rivera, Associate Director of Development for the Diocese of Camden. They discuss the nuances of fundraising, an update on her own work, and the two have a quick discussion about their own fandom of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to end the podcast. Don’t worry, no spoilers :)

  • Talking Saints - Maria Goretti
How many of us, at the point of death, would ask that our enemies be “with me in heaven forever?”
Saint Maria Goretti did say this on her deathbed, and not request just any enemy- but her murderer, Allesandro Serenelli.
The faith, love, and mercy of this young Italian girl, 11-years-old when she was killed for resisting Allesandro’s advances, are recounted by our Talking Saints’ co-hosts Laurie and Pete today, the feast of Saint Maria Goretti.
Her powerful story of forgiveness continues to touch the hearts of others, including Allesandro, who repented while in prison and attended her canonization in 1950, along with 500,000 others - one of the largest crowds ever for the declaring of a saint.
Saint Maria Goretti, Patron of youth, purity, and victims of rape, pray for us!
Our hosts, as well, in this Year of Saint Joseph, continue the recitation of “The Litany of Saint Joseph,” which can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/litanies/litany-of-saint-joseph

Recently, The Joy of Love & Family Conference Series was made available on-line. This virtual conference, the result of a partnership among the five Catholic dioceses of New Jersey, will run though November and offer monthly presentations from acclaimed speakers from across the Catholic landscape who will be focusing on various aspects of family life, at all its stages. Cristina is an accomplished family life and campus minister with a passion for helping people understand the faith and how they can be active participants in it. Mike Walsh and guest host Donna Ottaviano-Britt chat with Cristina about all the conference has to offer Catholics in New Jersey and around the nation.
With more than 30 talks, some of which will be included as part of the series’ Spanish track, the conference has presentations for teens, young people, single parents, newlyweds, married couples, and even for grandparents on how to care for their adult children and grandchildren.

  • Kerry Fraser
Hockey refs, much like the athletes they ensure play within the rules, are a tough bunch. On today’s show we have one of the toughest and hardest working refs to ever lace up skates in the NHL, Kerry Fraser. Our guest this week, who retired in 2010 after a 30+ year career in the NHL where he reffed the most regular season games in league history, regales our hosts Kari Janisse and Mike Walsh with stories from his days on the ice, but also what made him the man he was then, and how he was blessed with a conversion in the mid-1990’s that brought him closer to God and into full communion in the Catholic faith. It’s a powerful conversation that speaks to the desire in all of us to find spiritual closeness with God, where it can come at any time, perhaps even on a drive along the Pennsylvania Turnpike as you’re heading to ref a game in Pittsburgh.

  • Encouraging People Back to Church
It has been a long 15 months, but as of June 5th, in the State of New Jersey the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass is lifted. It’s the most notable step in the “return to normalcy” since churches were reopened for Mass mid-pandemic. This benchmark got our host Mike Walsh and his guest Donna Ottaviano-Britt, director of discipleship and leadership for the Diocese of Camden, to begin thinking about the possibilities available to our parishes - priests, lay leaders and the faithful - for recreating or creating anew opportunities to welcome those who have been away from the parish community during the pandemic, or before the pandemic, or even those who have always avoided the faith. Donna and Mike have a great chat about how this time away has given us new insights into what our parishes can provide the faithful and what we can do to offer a sense of community that helps bring people to the Mass and to God.

  • Talking Saints - Justin Martyr
Considered to be the first Christian philosopher, Justin Martyr, whose Feast Day the Catholic Church celebrates today, demonstrates how the pathway to truth always leads to God.  This 2nd Century thinker/convert/martyr’s defense of the faith is unpacked by hosts Laurie and Pete this week, as the tireless saint’s writings show a man who found the goodness of the Christian life, and was determined to share it with all.
Saint Justin Martyr, Patron of Philosophers, pray for us!

Our hosts, as well, in this Year of Saint Joseph, continue the recitation of “The Litany of Saint Joseph,” which can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/litanies/litany-of-saint-joseph
