On this episode of Nailing the Apex, Arrow McLaren Team Principal Gavin Ward joins Tim and Adam for this episode of NTA. Gavin starts us off with his time working for Red Bull Racing, and how at times he had to manage his own frustrations while working within the team (2:59). In the early years, Red Bull Racing was a bit dysfunctional behind the scenes. Gavin tells us how the team in 2009 went overnight from being a tough work environment to one of the best environments on the grid, and how that propelled the team into a championship winning juggernaut (16:19). From 2011 to 2013 Gavin was Mark Webbers Performance Engineer and tells what made Webber a special driver. How Webber’s and Sebastian Vettel’s driving styles really differed (25:20). How does an engineer or Team Principal deal with 3 different drivers who have 3 different styles, ways of setting up a race car and difficulties that come with it (43:00). Gavin runs us through what happened to the team during the IndyCar Thermal $1 million dollar challenge, and takes us through what happened to them in qualifying (47:16), and finishes with a quick Daniel Ricciardo story.
