  • Talking Notes - Learn From Lebanon

What does Lebanon, Tap Dance Land, and algorithms have to do with each other? They all have to do with people. This week I work through the idea that microcosms can be great areas of learning. They teach us about how a particular group of people may begin to think and act given certain circumstances. Microcosms become even more interesting when we acknowledge the intersections they sit at. The numerous interactions and relationships at play are much more visible at a small scale. What happens globally, one might think is simply an amplification of what is happening on the smaller scale…even the smallest scale of the human heart.

  • Talking Notes - Having Impact

Ever wondered where the work was? You know, the work that would bring about real change. The kind of change that we could see, and know to be good. Identifying that work, has a lot to do with how we think about impact. In this week’s note I begin to share a bit about how I’ve been thinking through these questions.

  • Talking Notes - The End (In and of Itself)

What happens when a good thing begins to serve itself? What happens to the people involved? This week I endeavor to work out how such a thing can happen, and how we may try to prevent it.

  • Talking Notes - Snapbacks

What are the things that keep us from growing? In thinking about this question I’ve come to identify the experience of the snapback. That is, that moment when we find ourselves pulled back into an old habit, reactive decision, or norm. The things we used to do, and the people and places associated with them, can have immense pull in opposition to our own growth and transformation.

  • Talking Notes - The Governor

Continuing thinking about worlds, the question of governance arises. What, or better, who gets to decide what happens, or how things happen? Their character is of central importance.

  • Talking Notes - At Least Two Worlds

What is it like to envision change? Imagine living in an entirely different world. What kind of world would we aim to live in (if not the one we experience around us), and how might we get there?

  • Talking Notes - The Habit of Speed

This week I describe a challenge I’m facing as I continue to walk through the process of transformation, post-burnout. That is the habit of speed. Speed of listening, thinking, and acting, have all come to be challenges to the very process of changing. Not inherently evil, these habits of speed still pose a stumbling block to my continued journey towards ongoing rest. The slowness that I’ve experienced more recently provides a window into what a restful life can look like, however the need to be speedy – in tap dance land, in industry, and around some people – has me jumping back to old habits. Listen for the full story.
