Relationships month of July is almost over and we hope you have been enjoying this series! Join us with Inga as she talks about 30+ years of marriage as a TCK.

The whole month of July is Relationship Month, where we’ll cover topics surrounding different kinds of relationships through the eyes of TCK friends. This week we’re joined by a very special friend, a listener of Talks with a Third Culture Kid Friend, Carmel Valencia Indrawan. Carmel has lived in 5 different cities throughout her life; she moved to Singapore with her family when she was younger and lived there for six years. She then moved back to Manila to finish high school and college, and her first few years as a young professional. Then she spent some time in Shanghai and Paris for work. After getting married in the Philippines, she moved to Jakarta with her husband where she resides now.

She’s joined the podcast today to talk about her experiences as a TCK and her married life, like how she got together with her husband and some of the things they have in common like cultural curiosity and understanding. She shares some advice about her relationship and how she took her time growing as an individual before her marriage.

We take some time to discuss some common questions about marriage life, like “how did you know when you were ready” or “how to handle long distance relationships.” We talk about Carmel’s individual pursuits and passions and her thoughts on her marriage and how her relationship has grown over the years.  We also discuss the importance of communication and how it plays a huge role in being able to identify your wants and needs as someone in a relationship or seeking one.

It’s important to know yourself and that might mean taking time to learn about yourself as an individual, to know your attachment styles and tendencies so that you can work on them and grow to become more whole before you commit yourself to another person. Balancing your independent spirit and intentionally making time and space for growth is part of your journey too.

Join us as we talk about relationships, being an individual and being together in a partnership and some tips and tricks for TCKs who might be looking for partners in the future.

The whole month of July is Relationship Month, where we’ll cover topics surrounding different kinds of relationships through the eyes of TCK friends. This episode, we are joined by an old friend of mine (who i've never met in person!), Falyn Matsudaira. She was born in the US and moved to Russia due to her parent’s job as missionaries. 

After some time, her family moved to Poland during her middle school and high school years, then she moved back to the US to attend college and where still lives now. We take some time to catch up and talk about her perspective on relationships, as a person who married another TCK. 

Falyn shares some of her thoughts about being married to a fellow TCK and while they share some similarities in their journeys, their experiences are ultimately completely different and she talks about how these comparisons have added layers to their relationships as they grew closer in their partnership. 

As we discuss, we talk about how some TCKs may not want to have a partner who is also a TCK because we understand the complex emotions that come with moving around so frequently. However, Falyn talks about how these similarities have contributed to their initial connection as they began to date.  She also touches on some of the different personality traits she and her husband have and how these things complement their relationship.

It’s impossible to predict the what kind of people we will meet around the world and who we will connect with, but it’s important to learn about yourself and the way that you communicate with other people to establish those strong bonds. Don’t forget to work on yourself and give yourself some grace and kindness as you grow in your individual journey.

Tune into this episode where we talk about marriage relationships, and reconnect and reflect on topics from our teenage years, with the perspectives shaped by our experiences as adults.

This episode kicks off the whole month of July, which will cover topics around all kinds of relationships. Joining us today is Chris Constantino, a fellow TCK and staff member of the company (check out his previous episode here!) He’s returned to the podcast to talk about relationships and we take a deep dive into our experiences with friendships as TCK.  

As both children of foreign service families, we are familiar with saying goodbye to the friends that we made as we grew up, moving from country to country and having these passing relationships has affected how we view relationships even as adults now. Through this episode we talk about how friendships are tested through time, distance, and how friendships can survive those periods of strain or difficulty. We share our experiences with different kinds of friends and our thoughts on how communication may differ from person to person. We also share how we handle our own friendships and our perspective on friendship dynamics.

As TCKs, we meet so many people but at the same time, we often have to leave those great people and the grief that follows is never easy, but this has helped us learn to appreciate our friendships even more.

At the end of the day, people take care of their relationships in many different ways, some people may talk every day, while others share their heart when you meet up in person, and still, others show how they care through their actions. Relationships are built on the choices you make to nurture them and having confidence in the friendships that you make will help them grow even stronger. 

Even the best of friends will go through periods where life gets busy, and communication may not look the same as it used to, but maybe all they need is a message (or meme) from a friend to cheer them up. 

Join us as we catch up and talk about what friendship and relationships look like from the eyes of TCKs and how our experiences play a role in the relationships around us.
