Sam Harvey is an endurance athlete, coach, New Zealand champion + record holder, and tied the World record before ultimately assisting in the breaking of it for backyard ultras. With a remarkable record of 677km, 101 loops, and non-stop competition for over four days – Sam is regarded as a pioneer of the backyard ultras, coaching himself & others toward unknown, boundless heights of this running discipline. Coming off the world-record-breaking Australian Masters Ultra event, Sam went on to win the Krayzie mid-winter backyard ultra in NZ just 10 days later – clocking in close to 1,000km in two weeks. Running and raising money for I Am Hope, a youth mental health charity. Next in his sights are, among many things I’m sure, the individual Backyard Ultra world champs in October (21), coming up for Sam – in his second home in the US (Tennessee)!! Speak your dreams, achieve the impossible, and walk tall in spite of those who doubt you. Morgan Blind – Creator of The Weight of Winning, & Harvard scholar-athlete. From a young age, Morgan has truly embraced + capitalized on her opportunities. Within rowing, she held NZ national titles in high school, before earning a spot on the Harvard Radcliffe D1 rowing crew where she competed alongside studies for a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology). Since graduating this past May, she raced at the iconic Henley regatta and began working full-time as a teaching assistant in a learning enhancement unit. She is an aspiring clinical psychologist. Morgan always gives back to others and shows her strength through vulnerability. During this conversation, she is beautifully open in sharing her experiences and learnings from being a competitive athlete, Ivy League scholar, and founder. This all ties into her tagline for the Weight of Winning community she’s built over the years: Empowering female athletes with skills and knowledge to balance the mental, physical, and emotional weight of competitive sport. Exclusive, first-time podcast for New Zealand's youngest (ever) mayor, Ben Bell. Withstanding immense public attention and uniting his council together after a rocky start, its a gift to have had the opportunity to hear from his perspective how he's grown this past year.
Ben has accomplished many things and worn many hats – during this korero we touch upon those roles, in particular, his position as the mayor of Gore, a beautiful town in NZ’s South Island. Most importantly however, I get to chat to a fellow 24-year-old, who has a job, just like me, that has propelled him into the media spotlight.
For our US listeners, I must clarify, it is not common for 24-year old’s to sit as national politicians in New Zealand.
Ben became the youngest mayor elected last November, 2022, at 23-years old; and not without some classic tall poppy commentary which he tackles head on.

Dr. Graham Turner has spent 25+ years specializing in coach and athlete development, holding a PhD in Talent Development in Sport. He works at the Australian Institute of Sport as a Performance Pathway systems leader. Graham recently became a published author with ‘The Young Athlete’s Perspective: Talent Development Stories: What They Want and Need.’
This book is something special, it is insightful and truly gives a voice to the six young athletes involved. Their stories are cleverly intertwined with the expert narration Graham provides - he doesn't override but instead amplifies what they're experiencing + explaining. Essentially, breaking down the 'what, why & how' parents + coaches can best help their aspiring young athletes. He leads through principled interaction, where respect is mutual, trust is established, and commitment is reciprocated.
During this chat Graham shares about his extensive background in sport with roles including coaching, physiotherapist, teacher, physical preparation & injury management, consultant, sports science lead, lecturer + academic. I found it partiuarly comforting when we dive into his decision making for professional & personal moves throughout his journey.
Graham has worked within high-performance sport institutions across the globe and across many high-performance sports, shaping systems & athletes to progress talent into medal winning performances.
