The bout was marked by a contentious moment in the ninth round when Davis unexpectedly took a knee after a glancing jab from Roach. Referee Steve Willis initiated a count but then deemed it not a knockdown, a decision that significantly impacted the final scorecards. Two judges scored the fight 114-114, while the third had it 115-113 in favor of Davis, allowing him to retain his WBA lightweight title.
