Jesus commands us to "love our neighbor as ourselves" but who is our neighbor? Is it the person next door, your best friend across town, or does it also include the people you wake up to each morning?
Join me as Rachel and I discuss how hospitality is not just something we pull out for guests on Friday night, but should be a daily practice towards the people in our own home. We talk about things that might distract or hinder us from prioritizing this, as well as how we can choose to gladly share with our family all that the Lord has shared with us.
It's an encouraging episode, I hope you enjoy!

Today I'm sharing a conversation with my friend Liz, and we chat about what hospitality has looked like for her over the last few years of transitioning out of her parents home into student ministry and then to the UK for studies.
Liz is a kindred spirit with a love for people and hosting (and candles!), and it was fun to hear how her childhood home inspired and encouraged her to prioritize hosting right from the start of living on her own. We talk lots of practical details of what being hospitable has looked like for her with housemates, classmates, and while living in a new country. I hope you enjoy!
(FYI: I recorded this last year in the early days of my podcast and I'm sorry to say I didn't nail the audio on this one. I've tweaked it as best I could, but still wanted to share the conversation because I think it's an important one, you just might need to listen with the volume all the way up!)

Today I'm talking with Renee, a wife and mom to 5 little ones 7 and under at the time of this recording. We discuss how isolating the early years of motherhood can be, and how we can find ways to be a friend + gain a friend during those years!
My goal for this conversation was not to heap heavy burdens on those of you in the thick of little people and little sleep, but to show that hospitality doesn't have to be difficult or overwhelming, it can be as simple as packing some goldfish + fruit and inviting someone to meet you at the park.

Jessica and I have been friends since the early days of married life, and while we have much in common and attend the same church, books + book club is where our friendship has flourished the most.
Jess and I talk about why we think reading is important, as well as why book club is a perfect opportunity to show hospitality and build a framework for purposeful conversations that go deeper than your typical small talk. We also give practical examples of how our book club (which is slightly unique, but also the best) works so you can start your own!

Today I'm talking with Casey, who owns and runs the beautiful Mayhurst Estate in Virginia with her husband and four kids. I loved hearing how God led them to choose a life of full-time hospitality, "for the glory of God and the good of others."
Casey is a gifted hostess with a deep love for people, and I think you will love learning from her expertise about how to serve people with your life and home.

Today I'm talking with Laura, a mom and wife to a Mississippi farmer. We're tackling an oft requested topic; what does hospitality look like when you live in a rural area, outside of the typical neighborhood and community?
I hope this episode is helpful and thought provoking as we discuss how to prioritize getting people in your home even when you live in the middle of corn fields, an hour away from the closest walmart.

"If Jesus called himself the "bread of life," why is it that our relationship with food is so complicated? We love it. We hate it. We hate that we love it. Whether we're obsessing over what not to consume--carbs, sugar, alcohol--or what we will devour--fat free, dairy free, gluten free--food has become burdensome." (Harvest House Publisher)
Join me as I talk with Tilly about her book "Broken Bread: how to stop using food and fear to fill spiritual hunger" which essentially takes a long look at the question: "What does Scripture actually have to say about how believers ought to think about food?"
We talk about how we can we use the table to love others more than we love ourselves, instead of drawing up a lot of unnecessary lines that keep us from gladly pulling up a chair and digging in.

Today I'm talking with Maryanne, a wife and mom to 4 kids, most of whom are teenagers. We discuss how to make our homes a warm and compelling place where our children are eager to come home, and somewhere they feel free to bring their own friends. We also touch on how as moms we can gladly send our young adult children out into the world instead of clinging to them when it's time to let go.
It was an encouraging conversation for me, even though I'm still a few years away from that season, and I think it will be an encouragement to you as well!

If you haven't already listened to last week's episode I recommend going back and doing that first, but today I finish my conversation with Courtney by talking about how God has grown her family with bio kids and several different kinds of adoptions. We talk about how orphan care is an important part of showing hospitality to the vulnerable, and the many ways we can make that a priority in our lives.
Today I'm talking with Courtney, she's a pastors wife, bio and adoptive mom to now 6 little ones (having recently completed the adoption of the 2 she mentions in the interview), who has dealt with severe chronic illness for all of her adult life.
This is a 2 part conversation and today we talk about what hospitality as a pastors wife has looked like for her over the years, as well as how she shares her home and life with others in the middle of intense sickness.
Part 2 will be up next week--talking about hospitality and adoption!
