In this episode, we will continue reading A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway. I want to recap book ONE quickly before we begin book TWO. Last time, we read chapter TWELVE, finishing book ONE & now we will continue the story with chapter THIRTEEN, the start of book TWO. After reading, I will follow up with quick facts, offer my impressions of the text, & add a few insights from my research & experiences on topics related to the text. For this episode, I think it could be beneficial to discuss the Hemingway code hero.

A French soldier named Henry Barbusse published one of the first novels about WW1, Le Feu, under fire: the story of a squad. In his vivid recollections he wrote, “Two armies that fight each other is like one army committing suicide.” When we last left our hero, he had just been wounded & was on his way to wherever in the back of one of the ambulances he was supposed to be driving.

Warning!!!: In this chapter there are graphic descriptions of bodily injury & death. If you’d rather not hear the violent & gruesome details of war, I recommend skipping ahead to chapter TEN.
When we ended part one of chapter nine, the lieutenant & 4 mechanics who had be enlisted as ambulance drivers were sitting in a shallow dug-out, eating spaghetti & cheese, drinking stale wine, & listening to the artillery & machine gun fire & explosions creeping closer on all sides of their position.

I HATE it when anyone uses the term “authoritarian leadership” because it is completely inaccurate. Authoritarianism is not leadership. It is the enforcement of obedience to an arbitrary authority figure at the expense of personal freedom (that includes personal safety & survival). Authoritarians are characterized by their lack of concern for others; making them completely antithetical to genuine leaders.

According to an article I just read in psychology today, “Most fantasies serve a specific purpose: They can be entertaining, distracting, frightening, or, in the case of sexual fantasies, arousing. Fantasizing about specific goals can foster creativity, help someone better understand their wants and needs, and even enable them to plan for the future.”

Mark Twain was quoted as saying, “The man who does not read good books is no better than the man who can’t.”
My name is Tricia Sulpizio, I am a professor of communication & I want to…
In season 1, I will read “A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemingway, a love story set during WW1 & published in 1929. I’ve never read it but heard it’s a great book, written by a very compelling author; we'll see..
A warm beverage & a story before bed helps us relax, reduce stress, & get better sleep. It can also improve our memory, expand our vocabulary, & significantly increase our knowledge of the people, places, & things that make the world interesting.
Whether you just want to hear a calm voice while you drift off to sleep or you enjoy stimulation through conversation while relaxing with a good book, I want to encourage you to join me for tea & bedtime stories.
I look forward to talking to you soon. Thanks for listening!
