This podcast episode is different than any others we've produced for Teach Music Online.

One of the most common questions and discussion topics that I've seen in our communities is how to work with students who may have autism.

Have you ever had a student on the autism spectrum? Maybe you have and didn't realize it.

To help train us in this area I reached out to a TMO member Connie Wible who has more than 30 years of experience working with students who have autism!

She shares some of the most incredible ideas and stories in our discussion and I know that you'll be inspired to create more "adaptive" lessons for your students of all learning abilities.

Connie and I discuss ways that you can work with students who need a little bit of extra love or adaptive learning during their music lessons. Your studio policy is an important part of the registration process but your policy does not have to be pages and pages in length. Parents will not read policies that are unclear or too long.

Without a strong studio foundation, a studio cannot have lasting retention or growth. All teachers must take the time to consider their studio values so that they know how to accurately promote their studio and recruit students.

Consider asking yourself these questions:

Who has impacted your music career?

What traits did your teacher have that you loved? 

What do you love about playing your instrument? 

Why did you decide to teach in the first place? 

Who do you want to teach? 

What do you want to teach? 

What musical skills do you want to give?

What life skills do you hope to teach?

What developmental skills do you hope to pass on? 

What level of achievement do you want your students to arrive at?
