    Send us Fan Mail

Self-care is not selfish, but a lot of people think that it is. They think self-care is for other people. Or they convince themselves that they have to take care of other people first. You ignore your need to take care of yourself at your own peril, however. Learn why I mean by reading my newsletter article from this week at this link:  http://bit.ly/selfcarepracticestouseyourwholelife

Self-care strategies can go a long way toward helping you both manage and relieve the stress in your life.

For more on how to manage and relieve the stress in your life, take a look at my stress management cheat sheet here:  https://kittyboitnott.lpages.co/cheat-sheet-on-stress-management/

  • Teachers in Transition - Episode 45 - Interview with Suzanne Klein, Former Teacher Turned Serial Entrepreneur

    Send us Fan Mail

In today's episode, I interview Suzanne Klein, a former teacher turned serial entrepreneur. Suzanne worked as a teacher in multiple roles and different grade levels before becoming an instructor for BER (Bureau of Education And Research). She developed a writing curriculum that was so effective she was able to turn it into a million-dollar idea--literally. She started a business using the writing curriculum and eventually sold that business for 7 figures. Now she is starting a new business and she is helping teachers who want to start their own business build the strong foundation that they need to be successful. From helping them flesh out the germ of an idea to planning when to quit their teaching job, Suzanne is there to help. The difference between what Suzanne does and what I do is that Suzanne want to help teachers with ideas for a business to create the business foundation. I help teachers who want a traditional job outside the classroom and need to understand the fundamentals of the job search process as well as how to create the tools they need for success:  a winning resume, a compelling cover letter, a stellar LinkedIn profile and the ability to interview with poise and ease.

  • Teachers in Transition - Episode 44 - Middle School Teachers are Feeling High Levels of Stress

    Send us Fan Mail

A recently released study conducted by the University of Missouri indicates that 94% of middle school teachers are feeling high levels of stress. Needless to say, that is very alarming. Interestingly, the article posted in Science Daily entitled, "Nearly All Middle School Teachers are Highly Stressed" pointed to the negative effect that the high level of stress by teachers must be having on students "both academically and behaviorally."

I don't doubt that stressed-out teachers in our middle schools--or any of our schools--has a potentially negative effect on students. But I wish the concern were more focused on why teachers are feeling so overwhelmed and what is causing their alarming level of stress.

Listen to today's episode during which I talk about this study and why teachers are are stressed need to do for themselves in the self-care area.

  • Teachers in Transition - Episode 43 - Interview with Brittany Long of "Life After Teaching"

    Send us Fan Mail

When thinking about changing jobs (or careers) some people would rather work for someone else as an employee and others would prefer to strike out on their own. The trouble is they don't know how or where to start.

My guest today, Brittany Long of My Life After Teaching offers in my interview with her that a health scare sent her looking for something she would rather do with whatever life she might have left instead of teaching. She found the answer in starting her own business.

She and her husband, Zachary, manage their business from home and part of that business includes moderating a Facebook page at "Life After Teaching with Brittany and Zachary Long." Check it out!

In today's conversation, I let Brittany tell her story and we discuss how what we do individually has the potential for helping more teachers who are exploring the possibility of leaving the classroom for another job or career. If you want a traditional job and need up-to-date job search tools like a resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and know-how when it comes to preparing for an interview, then I am your gal. If you want to create a business that includes creating a sales funnel or a legitimate work-from-home gig, then Brittany is your go-to gal.

And it is possible that you need both of us. You may need a day job while building your side hustle into a full-time endeavor.

Here is Brittany's official bio:  Brittany Long is a former middle school science teacher turned six-figure freelancer and entrepreneur. She left the classroom to work as a copywriter, funnel builder, and email marketer while also helping teachers transition out of the classroom by finding a side-hustle that can turn into a full-time hustle. Brittany and her husband Zach, along with two small dogs and a baby on the way, do their freelancing work from home and run the blog LifeAfterTeaching.com. Together they have paid off over $60,000 in less than 8 months and continue to advocate for side hustles, debt-free living, and skill-building.

  • Teachers in Transition - Episode 39 - Why Not to Slack Off Your Job Search During the Holidays

    Send us Fan Mail

I can't tell you how many times I have heard people say, "I am going to knock off the job search over the holidays and start fresh after the New Year," They mistakenly think that everyone else is taking a break for the holidays. I say "mistakenly" because they are wrong! Many companies only take the actual holidays off...and they still have openings to fill...sometimes openings that must be filled before the end of the calendar year.

You've heard the saying, "You snooze, you lose." And that is possible when you are job hunting and decide to slack off over the holidays.

Use this time to check back with HR directors to see about that job you interviewed for a few weeks ago. If you learned that they filled it already, at least you now know. But if they are still searching for someone, your showing extra initiative and interest might spark their interest in YOU!

Listen to why I believe that you should NOT slack off your job search during the holidays.

The holiday season is stressful for some. In fact, for some people, it brings more stress than joy.

Teachers hand on to the thought that during their holiday break, they can get some rest. But there is no rest for the weary person who is responsible for decorating, baking, party planning, and attending, and Christmas shopping while working full time.

If you find yourself more stressed than usual with all the holiday activities going on, you may need to take a breath (literally, take a long, deep breath) and consider that you need to take care of yourself.

Listen to hear how important the 7 strategies for managing your stress are even more important to heed to when we are in the midst of the holidays.

  • Teachers in Transition - Episode 37 - Why You Need to Ask Questions at the End of An Interview

    Send us Fan Mail

Too many people under-appreciate the importance of preparing properly for an interview. As a result, they show up under-prepared, and it shows. If you want to wow the people who are interviewing you, you need to do your due diligence by researching everything you can find about the company or organization, their mission, their vision, their challenges, their accomplishments, and the people who work there. Also, you need to understand the job and its requirements. When asked at the end of the interview if you have any questions, you run a risk by not asking anything. It shows a lack of interest. It conveys that you haven't done the research, and it even conveys that you may not understand the job well enough to ask the right kinds of questions.

Listen to this episode to hear how Kitty Boitnott, Heart-Centered Career Transition and Job Search Coach offers that you should prepare questions of your own to ask at the end of an  interview and why not asking questions can ruin your chances of getting the job,
