Hello, victims, and welcome to the Tech for Good Live podcast! If you’re new here, this is a podcast all about using technology to have a positive social impact. If you’re a regular visitor, please seek medical help.
This episode is jam packed with drama, despair, and a little dash of whimsy. We’ll be talking about Amazon again. Not content with destroying economies, local businesses, the lives of their employees, privacy, and… well, the world… they’re now also destroying their own stock.
We’ve a positive story about HSBC and Shelter working together to help people without a fixed address manage their finances.
And Greg has discovered a new use for plastic and apparently it’s delicious.
Joining host Bex we have Greg Ashton, strong, reliable, and a little bit dangerous.
And our special guest is Dr Alina Kadyrova - Member of the TfGL team, who has just finished a PhD in social innovation.
Discussed on the show:

Welcome to another Tech for Good Live podcast, if you’re new here, run, run for the hills. The podcast title might sound like a lovely look at adorable technology projects doing good in the world, but more often than not, it’s actually about all the terrible stuff happening in the world.
I suppose we should start every Tech for Good Live with a content warning based on the types of things we usually discuss, but our first segment this week feels pretty heavy on sexual assault, so we’re letting you know up front.
We also talk about newspapers being divisive (nothing new there) and Amnesty international are launching an Algorithmic Accountability Lab, which we’re very intrigued by. We do have a good news story to finish up with and it’s obviously about alcohol.
Fay Schofield is on hosting duties, and she’s joined by TFGL team members Greg Ashton and Tom Passmore
And our special guest this week is Lou Lai, Strategist, fundraiser, marketer, charity lover. Lou is the Transformation Director at Manifesto London, Founder of FemMentored and a trustee of Blood Cancer UK.

In this episode we’re talking about a global movement that is putting people living with disabilities on the business leadership agenda. We’re also talking about how the online world is responding to asks for support for charities in Palestine. We also chat about how algorithms on Facebook and Twitter may be further suppressing marginalized voices around the globe.

They say necessity is the Mother of Invention, so strap yourselves in for a hackathon of creativity. The TFGL Bat Signal has been beamed into the sky leaving Ben White, your stand-in host to sort of moodliy perch on a gargoyle somewhere trying to get a good Zoom connection.
In this episode we’re talking about the interesting choices ahead for employers in the third sector, coming to terms with a more remote workforce. Twitter have opened the tip jar and Signal has been shining a light on Facebook’s targeted advertising, leaving the team to wonder what they’d be labeled as.
Joining Ben (Tired Professional Dad) is Greg Ashton (Angry Food Obsessed Dog Dad) and our special guest Zoe Amar (Knackered Tech Nerd)
Zoe is widely regarded as one of the charity sector’s leading digital experts. She founded digital agency and social enterprise Zoe Amar Digital in 2013, she is the Chair of The Charity Digital Code of Practice and her podcast Starts At The Top discusses how leaders across all sectors are using digital to navigate change,
If you work for a charity or a non-profit organisation based in the UK, Zoe would love to hear your views about your digital skills and support needs for the 2021 Charity Skills Report. You can take the survey here.

This podcast is all about using technology to have a positive impact on the world. Sometimes though, we talk about the opposite of that. You know, like Elon Musk’s plan for a slave army on Mars. Or Zuckerberg’s plans for a slave army on earth, or Tim Cook’s plans for a beautifully branded slave army on earth.
This week’s episode will surely be upbeat though, because we’re finally in the month of May. Pre-slaughter lambs are in the fields. Flowers are blooming everywhere except in Bex’s flower beds. Not a euphemism.
We have a quick update on Basecamp, where everything is absolutely fine.
We delve into the numbers and statistics and wotnot about charities and their emissions and energy use in 2020. Also absolutely fine.
And in the tech news of the month we talk about how police have been given the go-ahead for using facial recognition technology. I’m sure that will absolutely not lead to horror stories of racism.
So yeah. Uplifting content from beginning to end.
Joining host Bex, we have Greg Ashton and Ben White from the TFGL team.
And our special guest is Stuart Pearson, Chief Digital Officer at Citizens Advice Manchester

Welcome back to another episode of the Tech for Good Live podcast!
We’ve a lot to talk about this week, including:
The planned “Instagram for Children” spin-off seems to have been scrapped by Facebook. That’s good, but surprising news, because Instagram has always been indifferent about the harm they cause kids, so let’s see what happens there.
Big tech and the incoming anti-trust action. That sounds incredibly boring, but we’ll try to keep it fun.
And a really concerning “innovation” in prison tech.
Joining host Bex on the show this week we have TFGL team members Fay Schofield and Ankur Asthana.
And our special guest is Ross McCulloch, Director of Third Sector Lab who specialise in digital strategy & service design for charities.
He is the founder Digital Trustees Scotland - a movement which aims to get a tech professional on every charity board. Ross developed and facilitates the highly-successful SCVO Digital Senior Leaders Programme. He also runs the CharityComms Scotland Networking Group and Third Sector Geeks WhatsApp Group to help strengthen the charity digital community.

We’re still recording these episodes remotely on plague island but we’ve got a great episode lined up for you, filled to the brim with stories like...
Fake news on Facebook. Don’t worry though, we’re pretty sure it’s a one-off.
Prince Phillip, even though dead, is still able to contribute to the UK being less equal. Skillz.
And YouTube decides to…. *checks notes* favour white supremacists over Black Lives Matter.
So yeah, that all sounds fun right?
Joining Bex on the show this week we have TFGL regular Greg Ashton and making a second appearance on the podcast, our special guest is Sarah Miguel.
Sarah is Head of Business Development at People's History Museum (PHM), a Trustee at MASH and will soon be joining the board of Future Everything.

Whilst the UK faces the confusing weather combo of freezing temperatures, snow and glorious sunshine. We're here to provide you with some ever consistent gloomy forecasts.
This week on the pod we look at why Wikipedia is putting the HIS in history. There's an exciting new youth focused development from NSPCC. And Facebook comes out swinging like… well, like Nick Clegg in a fist fight. And by fist fight we mean a 5,000 word essay on medium. Thanks, Medium.
