Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. IBM calls it X-Force Red….a team of hackers it employs that work to make computing systems more secure. They look to find vulnerabilities before criminals do. It is headed by Charles Henderson…and he says with companies today having so many people working from home…there are new risks to be wary of. For instance..
“The employee in the call center used to go in, they’d work from a secure terminal, they’d work in a secure room and when they were done for the day they left all the personally identifiable information, the confidential data, at work and went home. Now that call center employee is taking those calls, in maybe their kitchen.”
On perhaps their own computers….leaving all of the security controls behind. There’s more info and tips….at www.ibm.com/security.

It is the same technology used by many hospitals and medical facilities….and can be effective when used properly. There are rechargeable wands that can be used. Hammacher Schlemmer markets one that uses LED lights. For a purse sized model…Fuhai makes a foldable, rechargeable UVC Wand slated to retail for under forty dollars following a successful campaign on Kickstarter. Since the UVC light is not safe for the eyes or skin….it features a safety lock and turns off automatically if the wand is turned upward. With proper precautions…it could be a smart purchase to disinfect everything from packages to door knobs and more. Search for Fuhai on Kickstarter for more.

Results may vary depending on the types of applications you use…but for me….testing it on an older Windows PC produced some big improvements. CEO Kevin Cornell..says the optimization uses artificial intelligence…analyzing everything from network connections to other hardware and applications…
“You should see about a 30 percent overall improvement but some of the networking…we’ve seen some very big jumps, three to four to five times as fast.”
Cornell says a Mac version is on the way as well. The price is a reasonable 45 dollars a year for up to five computers in a household. There’s also a seven day free trial….at www.vooshperformance.com.
