एक श्रीनगर तो सभी पर्यटकों को पता है। डल झील, शिकारे, हाउसबोट, शंकराचार्य हिल और खूबसूरत बाग़। लेकिन इससे हटकर शहर की गहराइयों में एक और शहर बस्ता है और उसे डाउनटाउन के नाम से पुकारा जाता है। यही वो इलाका है जहाँ शहर का असली रूप दिखाई देता है, व्यस्त लेकिन गुमसुम। दबी ज़बान में बात करता। एक ऐसा शहर जहाँ इतिहास हर मोड़ पर मौजूद है और वर्तमान पर उदासी की चादर लिपटी हुई है।

The other side of Srinagar

There is a side of Srinagar that's rarely visited by tourists as it evokes strong emotions. A place where every turn is littered with history but also with hostility. However, all the religious places and a tomb are found in the maze of lanes and bylanes. Yet the area called downtown drains you as it breathes sadness. It seems pathos pervades every part of the area.

A desolate beach and a quiet village greet you when you reach Kappad Beach where Vasco Da Gama landed close to 400 years ago. A small nondescript concrete memorial informs you in a terse language that the history defining trader from Portugal landed here. The quiet indifference of the people and the "blink-and-miss" memorial makes you think if the oft-repeated criticism of Indians being averse to history has merit?

It's a symphony in stones, depicting the birth and death of human life and the importance of spirituality in between. Kolkata was a city built by the British and it was their capital from where they ruled the subcontinent. They build the city as a mirror image of towns in Britain with broad boulevards, Gothic architecture, great institutions and a vibrant nightlife. But today it's all shadowed by filth, squalor and overpopulation. You need to wait till the dead of the night to discover its lost glory.

Faith In Humanity: Triyuginarayan

Far from the madding crowds of big cities and civilization, up in the Himalayas lies a small village Triyuginarayan. It's residents, the simple hardworking hill people, enacted an inspiring story eight years ago after a massive flash flood in Kedarnath. They housed thousands of tourists and fed them with their own reserves to a point where they themselves were driven to hunger and penury. Yet they were happy that they were able to save thousands from perishing.

Vault of history: Vidisha

The small town of Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh has the distinction of having a continuous history that's more than two millennia old. From the times of Ashoka to present day it has an unbroken chain of evidence that suggests it was an important trade route in the past. Even today it's Vijay temple or Beej Mandir is in the news for its uncanny resemblance to the new parliament building that's being built in New Delhi.
