  • Podcast: 5G set to open an era of invention, imagination
According to Sal Visca, telecom expert and chief technology officer at commerce cloud platform Elastic Path, 5G holds more potential than simply a new type of plumbing for the network where there’s more capacity, more speed and more data. In this podcast, Visca explores the some of the potential inventiveness and creative disruptiveness that 5G is likely to trigger. Visca thinks that 5G will change the way companies actually operate, communicate, and connect to their respective communities of vendors and customers. Visca also sees profound opportunities for the channel, principally in moving beyond selling traditional real time communications and into offering completely new ways of delivering customer experiences. “We’re going to see what’s possible,” says Visca, predicting that things once depicted as possible only in a distant future, are about to become the way businesses and consumers might achieve daily, as 5G’s impact ripples through the economy.

Visca’s company, Elastic Path offers “API-driven headless commerce solution” that enable service providers to deliver omnichannel shopping.

  • Podcast: Cisco introduces new generation of silicon, saves power, “massively scalable speeds”
Silicon One means new opportunities for service providers and channel

Last week, Cisco unveiled its technology strategy for building a new internet. 5G, AI, 16K streaming and other advances that change the way people and enterprises communicate and share content will revolutionize the Internet. “The traffic that is moving across the Internet, is growing unabated and is actually accelerating at a non-linear fashion,” says Michael Glickman, Senior Vice President, Global Service Provider Segment. “Service providers of all types… have to figure out how they keep up with that traffic explosion and how do they put the economics in place around the building blocks of the network that will enable them to do that,” adds Glickman.

Pointing out that this challenge includes considerations such as power and costs, Glickman discusses how Cisco’s Silicon One changes the math of the Internet. In this podcast we learn how Silicon One saves money, saves power, and adds speed. Glickman notes that with carriers that have rolled out 5G, data usage among consumers has been seen to grow up to four-fold. “Give a user bandwidth, we will find a way to use it,” notes Glickman. This opens up an economics puzzle for the carriers. While lowering the drawbridge on bandwidth is popular among consumers and business customers, it must be done in a way that meets rapidly rising expectations and can still be done with sensible economics in place. Glickman argues that Silicon One radically changes those economic assumptions.

Glickman also outlines the way in which a far faster and more ubiquitous Internet will not only be the way businesses communicate but can transform core functions such as manufacturing and logistical processes. In turn, Glickman outlines dynamic new service provider opportunities in these new spaces. Glickman also sees small business opportunities, where service providers can offer a transformative set of solutions that will enables entrepreneurs to match large enterprise customer experiences and sophistication. “Get ready for it,” Glickman comments. “It’s going to have an impact on business over time.”

  • Podcast: Smart 2FA is a big opportunity for service providers
With Telestax Restcomm Smart 2FA, communications service providers can enable enhanced account security with two-factor authentication, right out of the box. “There’s only a limited number of vendors that can provide multi-factor authentication,” says Kevin Nethercott Chief Commercial Officer at Telestax. In this podcast we learn that communication service providers are experiencing major opportunities by leveraging the Telestax CPaaS offering and then bundling in 2FA, where the provider can often deliver a better cost structure and better quality. Nethercott also discusses his thinking and observations for the coming year. “2020 will be a critical year for APIs, and these enchanneled use cases,” says Nethercott. Nethercott observes that many enterprises, who may still have a collection of on prem communication sites, have likely adopted a digital transformation plan, and that plan includes more than simply replacing legacy gear. Companies are seeking something new when they move to the cloud. As with 2FA, the upsell opportunities are there for providers able to offer more choices and solutions.

  • Podcast: BroadSource takes a closer look at CCaaS
The CCaaS era is about to move into top gear. Over the past decade many business operational technologies have moved to cloud whilst contact centres have remained on prem. With the introduction of a number of cloud native offerings, the next 3-5 years will see a steady transformation of CC infrastructure to CCaaS. This will enable businesses to fully retire on-premise equipment and focus on application orchestration to optimise and accelerate business performance. In this podcast Jason Thals, Co-founder and COO of BroadSource, takes a closer look at CCaaS. Thals thinks that the latent demand in CCaaS that some might be observing is actually the run up to a hockey stick style uptick in activity that we are rapidly approaching. Thals discusses what CCA and cloud companies can do now to be ready.

  • Podcast: Is Your IT Department Still Relevant
Everything changes. In this podcast we explore a major question for much of our readership:  what does the future look like for the IT department? Globally, enterprises in 2020 spend an astonishing $4 trillion on IT, telecom and mobility, an amount larger than the GDP of several G7 countries, combined.  And yet, the changing nature of technology, the way many of the products and services work, creates a change in the way the IT department works. Its traditional role is evolving. Timothy C. Colwell, AOTMP Executive Vice President, explores those changes and then outlines a vision for a changed IT department, one that matches the needs that will emerge in the ‘20s.

RL Networks is an Amsterdam based company offering a variety of secondary market products and aftermarket services to the IT market. In this podcast Omar Beyhum of RL Networks outlines how his company offers enterprises more value out of equipment when it comes time to retire gear and many options in between in terms of finding replacements parts and more. Beyhum also discusses ongoing issues in the after and secondary markets. • Podcast: Plixer steps up deep visibility and intelligence with strategic acquisition
Plixer, a leader in providing deep visibility for networkers and UC professionals into their respective networks, has stepped up their game with an acquisition which make the security picture they provide even more comprehensive. In this podcast Jeff Lindholm, CEO of Plixer and Ty Powers, Solution Architect at Great Bay, discuss Plixer’s recent acquisition of Great Bay, especially as it impacts the enterprise end user. “To be a player delivering real NDR (network detection and response) solutions, comprehensive NDR solutions, we really needed to expand our visibility beyond the network… down into the end point because that’s where you can get a wholistic view of what the behavior is all the way from that point, through the network, and up into wherever those application requirements are running, be they in the cloud or in an edge computing infrastructure,” says Lindholm. Lindholm reports that Plixer’s ability to deliver deep visibility into the modern multi-vendor, multi-platform network is second to none, but the acquisition provides the end point visibility that gives the user an even more complete understanding. UC and networking professionals will now have an even more comprehensive way to gain visibility into their network.

  • Podcast: Why Service Providers are ditching paying by the seat when choosing a Unified Communications Platform?
Cloud communications might have one Mad Men era vestige: the seat. Most companies in our industry continue to charge, plan, migrate, move, add and change, all based on a model that counts seats. But according to Jason Byrne, SVP for Products and Marketing at netsapiens, a recent report by Google suggests that three billion people work without “seats”, with something like 41% of the workforce working remote. The steno pool of 1969 is now an open space where teams meet one or two days on campus. Everything from information workers who telecommute to all manner of virtual collaboration, has radically changed the way we work and communicate. Byrne discusses related issues and problems such as oversubscription, and its impact on UC service providers. In this podcast, Byrne outlines some fresh thinking for the road ahead, including a shift to a session-based model. Byrne discusses how netsapiens can help service providers make the change.
