  • 2nd (Palamas) Sunday Vespers

The Order of the 9th Hour for 24 Feb followed by Great Vespers for the 2nd Sunday of the Great Fast, a Sunday of Tone 6, commemorating St Gregory Palamas and the "Triumph of Spiritual Orthodoxy". Some Greek Catholics have rejected this commemoration due to his later status and some anti-papal sentiments in his writing, but this is erroneous since the 2nd Sunday follows the 1st Sunday. The Triumph of Inner Orthodoxy of Hesychasm and Byzantine Spirituality follows the Triumph of External Orthodoxy of Liturgy and Iconography (i.e. Byzantine Artistic Expression). St Gregory's personal views of church politics reflected his time and would likely be very different if he were around today, but his contribution to our Spiritual and Philosophical Tradition is timeless and the same today and everyday.

  • Feb 24 Festal Matins

The Order of Orthros and Prime for Feb 24th, the Feast of the 1st and 2nd Finding of the Head of the Forerunner, when it occurs on a normal (Souls') Saturday of Lent; all the commemoration of the Departed was relegated to Compline last night wherein the order today is completely Festal in character: the only vestige of it being Lent is the division of the Psalms at the Kathismata.

The normal commemoration of the 2nd All Souls' Day on the 2nd Saturday of Lent is omitted (other than the usual canon for the departed in the tone of the week at Compline later this evening) due to the significance of the feast.

About Telethros (Gregorian)

From the publisher's feed

In this podcast, I will be uploading reader versions of services in the Byzantine Rite, on the Gregorian Calendar, mostly according to the usage of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. These are meant as guides to accompany and even direct life in the domestic church. We all live much busier lives than our ancestors, whose rural living in tight-knit villages around their parish churches allowed them to live their lives to the rhythm of the Church Year. We, however, often find ourselves commuting long distances or working longer hours which don't allow us the luxury of daily church attendance. So many of us turn to home prayer rules, but resources can often be few and far between, and even when they do exist, they can be complicated and time consuming to use. That's where this podcast wants to provide some support. By making the reader services, as they would be done un-priested in home or church worship, available in an audio-only format, my hope is that more of us can be uplifted by the liturgical core of our Byzantine Spiritual and Liturgical Tradition to maintain our prayer life in our busy modern lives.
