    The Order of Great Compline for the 2nd Thursday of the Great Fast. The Typikon prescribes that the saints' commemorations from Holy and Bright Weeks be done in turn at Great Compline during the 2nd to 6th weeks of Lent. The 2nd Thursday corresponds to the saint on the day of Holy and Great Tuesday, this year March 26: the Synaxis of the Holy Archangel Gabriel. For time and labor, I am only taking the Odes proper to the day of the week (Thurs eve/Fri): 5, 8, 9.

  • 2nd Tuesday Great Compline

    The Order of Great Compline for the 2nd Wednesday of the Great Fast. The Typikon prescribes that the various Saint commemorations which are displaced during Holy Week and Bright Week be done at Great Compline throughout the 2nd to 6th Weeks of the Great Fast. The Second Wednesday thus covers the Saint of Holy and Great Monday. This year that is the Great Feast of the Annunciation which, according to Conciliar Decree, is never omitted or moved except if it fall on Pascha itself. Therefore tonight, I have taken the alternate commemoration of March 26, St Irenieus of Sirmium, only using the Odes of the Canon which correspond to the Day: Wednesday Eve/Thursday: Odes 4, 8, 9.

In this podcast, I will be uploading reader versions of services in the Byzantine Rite, on the Gregorian Calendar, mostly according to the usage of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. These are meant as guides to accompany and even direct life in the domestic church. We all live much busier lives than our ancestors, whose rural living in tight-knit villages around their parish churches allowed them to live their lives to the rhythm of the Church Year. We, however, often find ourselves commuting long distances or working longer hours which don't allow us the luxury of daily church attendance. So many of us turn to home prayer rules, but resources can often be few and far between, and even when they do exist, they can be complicated and time consuming to use. That's where this podcast wants to provide some support. By making the reader services, as they would be done un-priested in home or church worship, available in an audio-only format, my hope is that more of us can be uplifted by the liturgical core of our Byzantine Spiritual and Liturgical Tradition to maintain our prayer life in our busy modern lives.
