Ten Thousand Posts

This week, we’re joined by writer and curator Matt Muir, to talk about various online ephemera haunting our screens. We spend a lot longer than anticipated talking about ‘Fruitslop’ and the genre of regurgitated AI videos where horny fruits keep cheating on each other, mostly with a banana that has a six-pack. We then talk about the challenges, and  creative possibilities outside of the platform economy, and whether there are acceptable use cases for AI tools when conducting creative experiments on the internet.

We’re joined by Screen Rot host Jake Farrell, to talk about his early experiences online, and how they shaped his personality today. Hussein and Jake briefly talk about their time at York University, and the unwarranted self-importance that comes with student journalism. We then talk about the proliferation of chaotic British people on social media and why they are so compelling, and explore the reasons why so many British comedians are now expected to make tiktoks and front-facing videos to explain why Britain is the way it is.

This week, Hussein and Phoebe catch up on their lives, and wonder whether it’s possible to do this show without mentioning the ongoing horrors.

They run through some rare fun posts, talk about various home cleaning strategies and ask what happened to Marie Kondo.

They also talk about the ongoing exodus of influencers from Dubai, and what this tells us about the future of the Gulf, its soft power strategy, and speculate on the future of Influencing online.

This week, Josh returns to the podcast to talk about the Theatre of Cruelty, and the Trump administrations use of ICE agents to create bizarre viral content for its diminishing base of supporters. We talk about how the administration’s content strategy has changed since 2016, and how it’s had to change to adapt to aimless scrolling and lowered attention spans. We also visit the UK and talk about the results of the Gorton & Denton by-election, and ask: did Matt Goodwin lose because he spent too much time on his phone?

Researcher and journalist Adam Smith joins us this week to talk about what happens when AI boosters hype up their own speculation. We talk about Moltbook, a project that purported to be a “social network for AI agents” and claimed to prove that the sentience and consciousness of AI was inevitable. Adam explains the tricks AI boosters used to present their bots as smarter than they actually were, and why Moltbook should be considered more as theatre, than a glimpse into the future of communication.

In this episode, we talk about Clavicular, an incel adjacent looksmaxxer who recently broke out of online containment and into the mainstream, and ask what happens when content creators are driven by attention at all costs. In the second half of the show, Hussein talks to documentary film maker Ben Zand about his recent film, ‘INSIDE THE GOON CAVE’ , and what his physical explorations into the depths of the manosphere taught him about the state of contemporary masculinity.

This week, Hussein chats to London Centric editor Jim Waterson about his recent story about a real estate contractor making money on the side through racist and Islamophobic rage bait on TikTok.

Jim talks about how his team tracked the contractor down using a comprehensive knowledge of British Bins, how his content fits into the broader milieu of fake immigration stories online, that are having a deep impact on British society and its politics, and why it feels near impossible to stop.

Disclaimer: This episode contains references to SA and CSA, that may be upsetting to some listeners.

This week, we’re joined again by actor, director, and screenwriter Jonathan Daniel Brown to talk about Hollywood’s AI infatuation, and how it’s producing cheaper, and worse, films.

Jonathan talks to us about how the AI industry entered Hollywood, the pressures it has placed on creators by forcing out technical expertise, and how it’s driving film production out of Hollywood, and even out of the United States entirely.

We also talk about the recent cache of Epstein files, and, among all the darkness and evil, the revelation that Epstein and his acolytes seemed to also be obsessed with posting online.

Friend of the show Oobah Butler returns to talk about his latest documentary,  How to Make a Million in 90 days.

Live from New York, Oobah tells us about the murky financial world he stumbled upon while making the documentary, filled with bored fintech CEOs and finance guys devoid of any real ideas, and desperate to make as much money as they can through exploiting attention and hype. We also talk about why this project may have been Oobah’s funniest, but also most depressing – and what happens when a documentarian has to confront a group of people who refuse to engage with reality, while using their wealth to manipulate the world around them.

This week, we’re joined by political journalist  Zoë Grünewald, who talks to us about the attempts to regulate and rein in X in the UK, and whether the state has the ability to regulate an AI system like Grok. Zoë also explains why some MPs are unwilling to let go of their accounts, even as the platform gets overrun with abusive and racist material.

Of course, we also touch on the most important story facing the world right now, namely, the implosion of the Beckham family, and ask whether they could be put back together through the power of Cruz Beckham’s electro-indie musical project.
