Standard Orbit 178: The Gospel According to Star Trek
Author Kevin C. Neece Interview.
On first glance, the Christian worldview and the humanistic worldview of Star Trek would seem to have nothing in common. After all Star Trek takes place in a future when religion has essentially vanished from Earth. In that case, how can there even be a "gospel according to Star Trek"?
Ghost Ship.
On Literary Treks, we have reviewed the first original novel of each of the Star Trek series. Now it's time for our attention to turn to The Next Generation, and a very unique novel that shows us a take on TNG that was written with very little of the actual show to work with. Is the story representative of what we would come to know from the crew of the Enterprise-D, or is it a pale reflection that is nearly unrecognizable?
In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther talk about TNG #1: Ghost Ship by Diane Carey. We discuss our first experiences with the book, the plot of the novel, how closely the characters match their on-screen counterparts, our thoughts on the main conflict, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings.
In the news segment, we judge the cover of the upcoming DS9: Original Sin, discuss the upcoming books Star Trek Beyond – The Makeup Artistry of Joel Harlow, The Art of Star Trek: The Kelvin Timeline, and the second volumes of Dark Horse's Star Trek Adult Coloring Books. We also review two comics: New Visions #16 and Boldly Go #9.

Conspiracy.
Is it possible to follow the council given to not trust anyone? Isn't this the exact type of phrase given to breed mistrust? Friendship is built on trust and how can you take risks for your friends if you don't trust them? Picard takes a very calculated move to trust his crew and find evidence of this conspiracy within Starfleet Command. But his decisions nearly get his crew under the control of the alien invaders.
In this episode of Earl Grey, host Amy Nelson with special guest Justin Oser discuss "Conspiracy." This season one episode looks at a conspiracy that goes to the very top of Starfleet. We talk about the cost of friendship and how much risk are we willing to take for a friend, especially when we have a long and trusting relationship. Is it really feasible to believe that these scorpion-like creatures could get that far into Starfleet with the goal of overtaking the Federation? Is this a believable enemy?

Legacies of WWII in The Original Series.
For the cast and crew of The Original Series, World War II was more than just a dark page in the history books—it was an experience through which they had lived, loved, and lost. From piloting bombers over the Pacific to storming the beaches of Normandy, many of them had seen more than their fair share of action. Those who were too young to have served had witnessed the devastation that war brought to ordinary people. William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy—both raised in Jewish immigrant families—were also impacted by the conflict as the horrors of the Holocaust felt very close to home.
In this episode of Primitive Culture, hosts Duncan Barrett and Tony Black explore the war stories of Star Trek’s original cast and crew, focusing on Gene Roddenberry’s service with the US Army Air Forces and James Doohan’s time with the Royal Canadian Artillery. Along the way, we consider how The Original Series explored the historical legacies of the war in episodes such as “Patterns of Force” and “The City on the Edge of Forever.”
