  • 68: Midwifery Is Our Business
The Original Series Season 2 - Essential Trek Philosophy.  Season 2 of Star Trek: The Original Series playfully explores human nature, what human nature is and what it could become, its place in the cosmos, and its relation to humanity's past, present, and future. From future Space Nazis in "Patterns of Force" to ancient Greek gods and Roman gladiators in space ("Who Mourns for Adonais?" and "Bread and Circuses"), TOS season 2 explores the best and the worst of human nature across the whole of human history. Standard Orbit 174: Battle of the Battles

Battle of the Mutara Nebula Vs. Battle of Khitomer

Star Trek was never about big space battles but the movies, as well as the series, had some pretty intense skirmishes. In this week's Standard Orbit: we look at two big battles from the TOS movie timeline: TWOK's Battle of the Mutara Nebula and TUC's Battle of Khitomer.

Zach Moore is still off filming in an undisclosed location. Earl Grey's Richard Marquez joins me to discuss these two exciting scenes and compare the differences in approach, scale, tactics, and outcome. We talk about a possible different scenario for the Battle of Khitomer as well. We hope you enjoy this week's episode of Standard Orbit and share your insights and opinions on the Babel Conference.

  • Melodic Treks : 79: Scientifically Accurate

The Fantastic Voyage score with Brandi Jackola.

Many composers will have periods in their careers where a sound or an instrument becomes extremely influential, and they will adapt and modify that inspiration for several film scores in a row. One composer, however, seems to have had a style stick with him for a longer period than average.

In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Brandi Jackola to discuss two scores by Leonard Rosenman: his Emmy award winning score for the 1976 mini-series Sybil, and the strange and moody score to the 1966 science fiction film Fantastic Voyage, and how that score seems to be mirrored in his Academy Award nominated score for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

  • Literary Treks : 190: As the Q Turns

    Q-Squared.

During the original five-year mission, Captain Kirk and his crew found themselves at the mercy of a seemingly-omnipotent being: Trelane. Discovering that he was merely an out-of-control child, Trelane was corralled by his parents, members of the Q Continuum. However, he has now returned to exact vengeance on a new generation...

In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are joined by special guest Amy Nelson to talk about Peter David's novel Q-Squared. We discuss Trelane's status as a Q, the Picard-Beverly-Jack Crusher triangle, Riker and Deanna, Jack Crusher's uniqueness, alternate universes, funny moments, a cosmic temper tantrum, and wrap up with our ratings.

In the news segment, we review Mirror Broken #0, talk about the upcoming Juan Ortiz artbook featuring his TNG works, and rate the cover for the Klingon Empire Travel Guide by Dayton Ward.

  • 48: The Aging Agent
Skyfall.   Star Trek: Nemesis featured that pairing of writer John Logan and director Stuart Baird. While that effort may not have yielded the finest results, the duo would re-team in a uniquely different capacity on the 007 movie, Skyfall. Logan once again wrote the script. But this time around, Baird was not behind the camera, but in the editing room. In this episode of Stage Nine, hosts John Mills and Mike Schindler take a look at Skyfall. We discuss the similarities to The Wrath of Khan, Baird's skills as an editor, and photography of the movie. In news, Mike reviews the new Ira Steven Behr production, Lucky, and we critique the new trailers for The Orville and Star Trek: Discovery.
