Past Tense, Part I.
A growing gap between the haves and have-nots leads to a fractured society. In Star Trek’s 2024, America has tucked away undesirables in Sanctuary Districts. Sisko explains that social problems had to reach a breaking point before the US began to address them. “Past Tense” was prophetic in its time, and it remains so today—just seven years from Gabriel Bell’s famous stand.
In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing dive into the first part of this glimpse at the difficult road humanity had to travel to get from our present day to Gene Roddenberry’s future.

Mental Health and Counselling.
One of the stand out additions to the Enterprise-D bridge crew when Star Trek returned to television was a ships counsellor . The addition of a counsellor to the crew was a very bold step and reflected the attitudes of the 1980s towards therapy and sharing your feelings. Did The Next Generation's use of a counsellor and episodes tackling mental health help tackle the taboo of discussing mental health? Or did the use of Guinan as a confidenant with a cocktail reflect the type of therapy that many would prefer.
In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez and Lee Hutchison are joined by Duncan Barrett from Trek.fm's Primitive Culture to discuss how The Next Generation views mental health and the role of the ships counsellor. The team discuss their views and experiences of counselling and if the approach used in the series actually would help the Enterprise crewmembers. Richard looks at how counselling is used in the Armed Forces and if it echoes how it is used on a starship.
Note: There is a minor audio issue in the first nine minutes of this episode.

Kierkegaard and Stages on Life's Way. This time, we're talking "Soren," but not Dr. Tolian Soren from Star Trek Generations; we're talking about the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard! Søren Kierkegaard is well-known for his "Stages on Life's Way," or three different approaches to life: the aesthetic approach (novelty, adventure, and experiences); the ethical approach (rules, duty, and responsibility), and the religious approach (sincere commitment, meaningful dedication, and authentic leaps of faith). In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison discuss characters from the Star Trek universe that exemplify these three different modes of living. Oppenheimer, Degra, and Jetrel.
Star Trek has always been a looking glass through which we see ourselves, a way of examining our world, who we are, and where we came from. Trek.fm is proud to introduce our newest show, Primitive Culture. In each episode, hosts Duncan Barrett and Tony Black tie history and culture to Star Trekand discuss how our own world inspires the franchise we love—and how that franchise inspires us. In the pilot episode, “Destroyers of Worlds,” Tony and Duncan look at the relationship between J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb, and two of Star Trek’s complex figures: Jetrel and Degra.

Enemy Unseen, Part 2.
100 years earlier, a malevolent entity that feeds on fear threatened the crew of the Enterprise under Captain Kirk and framed Scotty for murder. At the time, Redjac, also known as Jack the Ripper, was thought to have been banished for all eternity. However, he has returned to terrorize the crew of another Enterprise!
In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson present part two of our discussion about the Star Trek comics collection, Enemy Unseen, which includes the story Embrace the Wolf. We talk about a sequel to "Wolf in the Fold," Redjac, the unorthodox method used to defeat him, overcoming our fears, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings.
In the news segment, we discuss a pair of interviews with the creators of the TNG mirror universe comic story Mirror Broken, announce that the UK Comics collection #3 is available for pre-order, judge the cover of the new DTI novella Shield of the Gods, and talk about David Mack's upcoming original novel The Midnight Front.

The Patriot Games score with John Takis.
One of the most respected and loved film composers was James Horner, who composed two scores for the Star Trek films: The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock. The 1990s were a very busy time for Horner, and a few films would inspire him to develop a sound that would lead him to his first Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1997 for the film Titanic. One of those important scores was 1992's Patriot Games.
In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by film score specialist John Takis to discuss the score for Patriot Games and how it would influence Horner's work. We also discuss Horner's ability to write extended tracks, synth elements in scores, and fully synthesized scores for films.
** please note that at 17:31, I incorrectly refer to the vocalist in the "Main Titles" as Marie Brennan from Clannad. Her correct name is Maggie Boyle, and she was not a member of Clannad.
