About John Berardo

Originally from Norman, Oklahoma, John always had an immense drive and the ability to expand his creative boundaries. Before starting the Cinema Production MFA program at USC, John received a BA from UCLA in Theatre directing and playwriting with a minor in Film, Television, and Digital Media. In 2013 John directed short horror film, Dembanger, about the dangers of social media and which received positive reviews and was the inspiration for Initiation, which was made for the Media Institute for Social Change, an institute with a mission to educate with entertainment. In 2014 he directed iLA as part of Giorgio Armani’s Films of City Frames which premiered at TIFF the same year. In 2017 John directed a short film, Strings, produced by James Franco as part of feature anthology, The Labyrinth. After graduating USC, John co-founded production company, Shatterproof Films, with co-writer and producer Brian Frager. Initiation is his feature debut.

About Kara and Mads

Kara Ballenger is a graphic designer and illustrator who puts a special emphasis on depicting characters from marginalized groups. Kara has chosen to predominantly work as a freelance artist and at a lower rate of pay than most of her competition, because she believes that everyone deserves a chance to advance their careers, and if she is able to assist them with her art, she is more than happy to do so.

Kara’s main goal in her creative work is to ultimately turn her artistic endeavors into a full-time job, so that she can publish books quickly and to a wider audience, as well as employing people from disenfranchised groups as illustrators, writers, and other creators.

Mads Cherluck is a writer and colorist who helps to bring Kara’s work to life in a dynamic and unique way. When they are not pairing up with Kara to create new graphic novels, Mads can usually be found writing ideas for future stories or painting commissions for people. They majored in Creative Writing in college and took private courses from Lori DeBoer in Boulder, CO. Mads enjoys using their art to spread the word about the ways that society engages in ableism and anti LGBTQIA rhetoric, as well as learning to insert the way other white people engage in micro-aggressions and systemic oppression against black Americans and other minority groups.

About Jonah Blechman

In a career spanning over 3 decades, Blechman’s first role of note had him breaking boundaries by kissing Leonardo DiCaprio in the critically acclaimed THIS BOY’S LIFE alongside Robert DeNiro and Ellen Barkin. Since then, he has appeared in over 70 roles in film and television, many of which have garnered awards and nominations at The Spirit Awards, Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, Outfest, Frameline, and a Best Actor Award at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. Blechman has acted opposite such industry greats as Mickey Rourke, Tobey Maguire, James Garner, Ann Margret, Nick Offerman, and even RuPaul. Whether it’s comedy or drama, Blechman stands out with performances that ignite critics and moves audiences.

Also a longtime theater performer, Blechman was the youngest Equity lead in the tour de force that is HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH. This is true of Blechman, as his curiosities have led him to successfully dive deep into alternate life paths including being an ABT ballet dancer (trained by Baryshnikov), an Orthodox Jew, a fashion designer, a publicist, and a TV network entrepreneur - all facets culminating into a truly creative life. Blechman has just added directing to his repertoire, having directed the television show QUEERX LIVE! featuring Jennifer Lopez and President Joe Biden on National Coming Out Day. An advocate, Blechman continues to champion the queer community through his partnership with the global Queer TV network, Revry.

Once the pandemic subsides, Blechman is set to star in two feature films in Prague with award-winning director Wiktor Grodecki (MANDRAGORA), and is preparing to star in and direct his opus feature BALL ROOM.

In the vein of BASKETS and Golden Globe-winning TED LASSO, this new comedy from creator Spencer Schilly (RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE) revolves around newly paroled pet psychic, Milton Michaels, played by award-winning actor, Jonah Blechman (ANOTHER GAY MOVIE, THIS BOY’S LIFE).

Schilly shares, “I’ve always had a special connection to animals, and feel they need to be heard. JC Calciano’s been working in the film business for 35 years in almost every capacity. In 2010, he decided to make his own films, so he started his own production company called, CINEMA175. His focus is gay, romantic comedy movies. His first film was, IS IT JUST ME?, a modern twist on the Cyrano Bergerac story. Next came eCUPID, a movie about a man who downloads an app to help him find true love.

JC’s third and most popular film to date, THE 10 YEAR PLAN, is a true story about two friends who make a pact to be lovers if single in ten years.

JC started writing books by adapting THE 10 YEAR PLAN into a novel.

In addition to movies, he also created a YouTube web series titled Steam Room Stories (SRS). The series became so popular around the world that it inspired him to make it into a motion picture (STEAM ROOM STORIES: THE MOVIE) and a book titled, REVENGE OF THE BROBOT.

About Tom Heard

Tom Heard was born in Long Beach, California, and grew up in Austin, Texas. At age ten he appeared in a University of Texas production of Julius Caesar playing, Lucius. He acted in Austin civic theatre throughout his high school years and upon graduating began working in regional theatres in Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles. His first film was, Black Snow (1989) playing Mel the pot-smoking bartender for the Houston Cinema Group. In 1999, Meg Thayer cast him as the hilarious and nefarious, Drew Stein in her Hollywood film satire, True Rights (2000) which Guerilla Filmmaker Magazine called, "an indie masterpiece." Other TV and film roles have followed, including an appearance on NBC's Friday Night Lights (2006) as Doctor Nelson, and in 2017 he played villain, George Lehman in, Revenge in Kind (2017). Getting It (2020) marks his writing and directing debut.
