Tonight features  a panel discussion with 3 individuals on the frontlines of the current abortion rights crisis: Dr. Jessica L. Rubino, M.D, an abortion provider in Austin Texas will be discussing the changes in how reproductive services are performed in Texas since the passing of the "heartbeat bill," Samantha McGuire, the National Field Director for American Atheists will be discussing activism and the legislative battle for women's reproductive rights, and Tina Marshall, founder of the Black Abortion Defense League (BADL), will be sharing about her work on the frontlines as a "clinic defender."

Samantha McGuire serves as the American Atheists’ National Field Director, working with local grassroots activists, volunteers, and affiliates to help them engage on emerging local civil rights issues, advocate for state-level legislation, and build thriving communities. Samantha was a recent panelist on the discussion “The Christian Right Attack on Abortion and Reproductive Justice and What We Can Do About It” at the 2022 American Atheist National Convention in April. Sam previously served as a volunteer regional director for American Atheists overseeing local activism in the Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland area, earning her the Atheist Activist of the Year award in 2019. Samantha holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Neuropsychology from the University of Massachusetts and a Master’s of Science in Counseling from Johns Hopkins.   

Tina Marshall is the lead organizer of Black Nonbelievers of Charlotte. A native of Sacramento, CA, she lived and worked in San Francisco and New York City until settling down in Charlotte, NC. There, she was a founding member of Sunday Assembly Charlotte, and in 2015, established the Charlotte affiliate of Black Nonbelievers. She is the founder of BADL, the Black Abortion Defense League. Tina works closely with Atheists Helping the Homeless Charlotte, which sets up monthly giveaways of meals, clothes, and toiletries to people experiencing homelessness. She is active in racial justice, providing bail, legal support, and supplies for arrested protesters, and volunteers with her local Democratic Party.

Dr. Hector Garcia, a clinical psychologist, researcher, and professor, publishes on the evolutionary psychology of religion, warfare, politics, and PTSD.  Dr. Garcia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of combat-related post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  

Dr. Garcia has published extensively on the treatment of PTSD in combat veterans, masculine psychology in the aftermath of war, the evolutionary roots of political partisanship, and the interplay between religious practice and psychopathology. He is the author of the books: Alpha God: The Psychology of Religious Violence and Oppression, and; Sex , Power and Partisanship.   Dr. Garcia has been featured on TEDx, PBS, and CSPAN.

Tonight we will be hosting three members of The Clergy Project: Drew Bekius, Lon Ostrander, and Duane Grady, who will be discussing the impact of losing one's faith while still an active church minister or leader,  and how The Clergy Project was formed to be of service to those in this predicament.  

What happens when you're a church pastor or leader, and your entire congregation, and even perhaps your local community, looks to you as a spiritual guide and yet you no longer believe in the faith principles they want to hear? What happens when you and your family's entire life and livelihood, maybe even your own housing, is dependent on your work in the church, a career that you may have been in for decades and so have no other equally sustainable income avenues if you left?  And who do you discuss your thoughts, concerns, and fears to when everyone you know is still deep in the faith you have been entrusted to believe in as well? Former pastors will be discussing tonight the mission and work of The Clergy Project (https://clergyproject.org/), a non-profit organization that serves church leaders who find themselves in this challenging position.

Marlene Winell, Ph.D., is a psychologist and educator who specializes in recovery from fundamentalist religion. She has experienced in her own life the transition from being a devout religionist to being a “reclaimer,” a person who has left religion and reclaimed her life. She has been working in the area of religious trauma for over thirty years and coined the term, Religious Trauma Syndrome.

Dr. Winell is the author of Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving Religion. She is now the director of Journey Free: Recovery from Harmful Religion (https://journeyfree.org/), an agency providing online support for individuals, groups, and professionals. The support group is called Release and Reclaim, and the professional training for religious recovery consulting is in the Helping Professionals Group.

Norm Cohen is the founder of NOCIRC of Michigan https://nocircofmi.org/, a nonprofit advocacy group that educates people about the benefits of intact genitals. As the son of a Reform rabbi,  he was circumcised at a home brit milah when he was eight days old confirming his Jewish identity into the next generation. Norm now considers himself an atheist and views circumcision as genital mutilation. As a religious rite in the Jewish (and Islamic) faith, Norm questions it's symbolism and purpose given there are "plenty of circumcised men who don’t practice Judaism.” (There is now an alternative Jewish ceremony called brit shalom, a covenantal naming ceremony without circumcision.)   Circumcision is relatively rare for non-religious reasons in Europe, Latin America, parts of Southern Africa, Australia/New Zealand and most of non-Muslim Asia, however 58% of newborn males are circumcised in the United States, the majority for non-religious reasons.  In his educational advocacy work for bodily integrity, Norm focuses on the fallacies behind the continued medical and cultural perpetuation of male circumcision in the United States, which legally protects minor females from non-consensual, elective genital alteration, even for religious or cultural reasons - and yet ignores the legal rights of bodily autonomy of newborn males born in this country.

Frank Schaeffer, an American author, film director, screenwriter, and public speaker is the son of theologian and author Francis Schaeffer, and was one of the "founding leaders" of the religious right "Moral Majority" movement of the 1970's and '80's. In the mid-1980s Frank left the Religious Right, after realizing "how very anti-American they are," a theme he explores in his autobiography, Crazy For God. In 2015, GracePointe underwent a highly publicized process wherein it stated, publicly and absolutely, that LGBTQ+ people were welcomed, celebrated, and included at all levels of GracePointe's community. National media picked up on this, and GracePointe experienced a seismic movement in its own community as it stepped away from a core belief of mainstream Evangelical Protestantism.
