So much of what we learn from God is just living out our lives and learning to honor Him in the process, rather than great heroic acts of sacrifice that we tend to celebrate in others. Israel was in the desert 40 years because they refused to let go of their victim mentality and step into God’s deliverance. When we feel like we are in a desert, it’s God humbling us to reveal to us what’s in our own hearts that is in rebellion against Him. Only then can I come to the revelation that what I produce by my own efforts will ultimately point to me. We don’t gain eternal life by the fruit of our own works, but by the words that come out of God’s mouth.

Description: Whether it’s Jesus with Peter and the disciples or Jeremiah with Israel, God sends the Prophet to parent us His way. Will we listen? God’s ideas of what we need are often in contrast to the things our soul wants. When God’s goal is our freedom He directs our paths into His righteousness, not our comfort. This life journey in Christ centers on where we focus: are we focused on the things of God and His Kingdom, or the things of man? There’s a freedom He’s after for each one of us but the pathway to that freedom can only be found when I take up my cross and follow Him.

Storms and testings build within us a confidence in God’s faithfulness and ability to perform what He’s promised. Less worry, more worship. Less control, more trust. Our misalignment to truth results in the trouble in my soul. God doesn’t remove the trouble, He uses it to realign me to His truth…and there’s where my freedom lies. “Deny yourself, pick up your cross, follow Me.” Jesus’ message is still the same. If I want to save my life, I must surrender it to Him.

Life is training, and it will take as long as it takes for us to come to the place where we allow God to be God. God’s ability to bring restoration to everything is truly supernatural. But He uses the natural everyday life circumstances, trials, and passage of time to get us there. Mary and Joseph fleeing to Egypt to save baby Jesus; Moses spending 40 years with sheep and another 40 with whiny Israelites; and Jeremiah in captivity buying real estate: God chooses to reveal Himself in ALL of it. So maybe you’re not being punished, just stubborn. The lesson will take as long as it takes for us to see God as Lord of all. To hear God speak sets us in motion to begin the journey. Then, after we are deep into the process, He will speak again to the impossibility of our situation, which is where we are in the maturing faith of Abraham.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God to salvation. This week Steve and Diana talk about how Paul was determined to preach Jesus and His message, which almost got him killed in every town he went to. When the Church was starting, it didn’t take long for false doctrines and rumors to cause strife. Traditions were being challenged by the Gospel. Today, is no different: the Gospel message is being challenged, even sidelined, and it is still the only truth that saves. Only Jesus gives life.

This week Steve and Diana discuss Tradition vs. Cornelius’ brave faith: If we don’t listen to the Living voice of God, we will adhere to our traditions rather than living by the leading of the Spirit, in agreement with the Living Word. Peter can’t even fathom the meaning of the vision he’s just had. It took a display of the Holy Spirit to reveal to Peter what God was up to. A new mission movement: Barnabus and Paul partner in evangelism and they head out on the first missionary journey. The developing church has old thoughts with new dialogue. Jesus wasn’t meant to be the introduction of Judaism but rather the fulfillment of Judaism. There’s a sweet heart-posture the epistles will unlock this week. What translates us out of the striving we’re in? The Word of God, which reveals our hearts, does. Who’s in? Who’s out? What fruit am I feeding on? You can’t fake it; your heart is telling on you by your actions. If we live by the Spirit, we keep in step with the Spirit. He then becomes the provision of the fruit we are trying to acquire through our need. Being in the Word daily gives our hearts a new opportunity to hear His voice. When we encounter the Lord in His Word, there’s going to be a change in the way we respond to Him, how we see the world, how we approach life, and how we treat others. If not, we may need to ask ourselves, “Am I just reading the Scriptures to confirm MYSELF?” Or am I yielding in every situation? Just because God told me to do something one time doesn’t make it right every time. Nor can I just cast it off as a one-time thing. Am I agreeing with myself, or letting myself be known by the One Who gave me life to know me and be known by me?

The Fathering of God. Hebrews 12 is a picture of how far Father has committed Himself to make us partakers of His holiness. Steve and Diana discuss Jesus’ mission to reveal the Father imparted to the disciples, who now are revealing Jesus, so everyone can be brought back to the Father. Establishing them as a people group that knows Who He is and will walk as he is. Love has responsibility. If I’m in covenant with you, the way in which I act when I am away from you reflects to what degree I value our covenant. Conviction isn’t guilt or shame driven, it’s love driven. He’s brought us near to both know us and so that we would reflect Who He is to this generation. We hold fast our confession and consider one another because HE is faithful. (Hebrews 10).  

The birth of the church: The Baptism of Holy Spirit becomes the marker that the disciples have been changed from fearful followers to bold proclaimers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even amidst persecution. The greater the persecution, the greater the Holy Spirit’s manifestation. When we read the Bible, we are doing more than reading facts, we are encountering God.

Whether it's through the prophet Jeremiah or Jesus, God is at work to bring His children into reconciliation with Himself. Steve points out how Jeremiah served as God’s marriage counselor to Israel, consistently calling them back.

Forgiveness is what Jesus commanded them in the upper room right after breathing on them to receive the Holy Spirit. We can’t ever leave the place of forgiveness if we are to enjoy God. We must receive it and give it away in every way.Grace is the strength, ability, provision to walk out God’s Word; and the Holy Spirit is present to make sure the grace of Jesus Christ is available.

If I’m stuck seeing God as punisher, I will miss His heart completely. Steve points out how intimacy with the Lord is based on understanding His heart. His heart is for union with us. When God points out sin in our lives, it is to liberate us, not to condemn us. As Steve and Diana focus on Timothy’s shepherding a new church, David’s relationship with God in the Psalms, and Jeremiah’s role as “marriage counselor” between God and Israel, we see the path to freedom is subject to my willingness to trust God and to rely on His ability to bring me to union.

The work of God is BELIEF in Jesus as the Christ. How do we know what to believe? We read the Scriptures with a believing heart of faith. Over and over Steve points us back to the solid ground of immersing ourselves in the Scriptures, seeking to discover Jesus. When we accept God’s Word as truth through the lens of the life and purpose of Jesus as Reconciler, we let the scriptures define us rather than trying to explain them. “The Law of Love” was Jesus’ directive for the Church. All of God’s power is expressed from that foundation. We’re all looking for mercy.
