It seems the current popular advice for growing your business is, “You need a coach,” and you’ll see dozens of people hanging up their coaching hat, advertising for clients. I personally believe hiring a coach is one of the best strategies you can implement in your business.

But the term “coach” is extremely broad and general so the key to hiring the right coach is knowing what you’re looking for and what TYPE of coach to hire.

After all, you wouldn’t hire a college basketball coach to bring the school’s football team to a bowl game, would you?

Every coach has their own niche – much like your business serves a particular niche – and within those niches, every coach has their own strengths and weaknesses. Let’s look at some of those niches in full detail.

When you are trying to build a business there are so many things to do. Early stage entrepreneurs fall into the trap of trying to do all. of. the. things.

Which is good for a while.

After all, how do you know what activities you want to focus on in your business if you don’t try out a lot of different things?

This tends to work from about zero to around $100k. (And let me tell you… your business is going to shift many times on the way to six figures.)

After that, once you hit your first six figures a year in business, it’s essential to pare down what you’re doing to only those that are most essential so you are able to stay focused.

When you first hung out your virtual shingle, you likely were thinking something like:

“I can’t wait to get away from this awful job.”
“I just want to be home with my kids.”

But while those are great for lighting a fire and inspiring you to make a scary jump to business ownership, they’re not so fabulous at motivating you to grow and improve. They won’t inspire you to increase your skills and raise your rates and be brave and authentic in your marketing. They won’t help you find the courage to hire a new coach or launch a brand new program.

To find the inspiration to make your business thrive, you have to identify the real why behind what you do.

Fact of the matter is clients who are unhappy are often your own fault. (I know; that’s not what you wanted to hear.)

That’s not always the case, but in my experience client happiness is directly tied to how well I do my job as a coach.

My ability to get results for clients is unmatched, but clearly communicating my value and the transformation clients will get has taken years of practice. The better I got at articulating value and transformation, the happier my clients became. They no longer had surprising expectations.
I invite you to learn from my mistakes, and implement these three things in your coaching business today so your clients — even the most difficult ones — will love you.
