We are feeding pigs, goats, and horses on a celebrity farm in Utah.
Another day in the life of this super generous and humble farm kid. I call him a kid because he’s my son’s age - on the outside - but inside he’s a very old soul. He’s got all his ducks in a row this one - he’s kind, patient, driven, fucking ecstatic about life, and has beautiful ideals about this amazing world we live in and the community he’s building to support that ideal.
Interview highlights:
+ farming is an honest living
+ profitable farming on 1/8-1/4 acre
+ generational farms are dying
+ the most beautiful place in the country
+ intentionally slowing down
+ living the dream AND just being OK
+ working smarter, not harder, with time management
+ putting both feet and all toes into your dreams
+ how store buying margins kill farmers
+ ZERO pesticides
+ working with nature
+ how every way you’re living should lead to your forever dream
+ NEVER haggle a farmer selling at a farmer’s market
+ worm poop is GOLD
+ food choice is the biggest impact on the environment
A taste:
“CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) - where literally the produce is going right into folks within a 15-mile radius […] Literally our whole business is supported by the community. Without the community there is no farm."
“We think that buying that nice 4-wheeler or buying that nice car is more important than feeding our families good food.”
Favorite quote:
“I’m living the dream.”

Paul made me cry.
And then I made him cry. So we’re even. Sometimes you meet people you go fast with. You become fast friends…355mph fast. That’s me and Paul. Within 10 minutes of meeting me, he agreed to be interviewed. As I was leaving, his race car teammates asked if they should get my autograph because I’m famous. I said, “No, but this guy’s about to be.”

“I think it has a lot to do with how you’re brought up. Unfortunately today there’s a lot of young people - there’s a lot of guys out there - young men, 21 yrs old - who can no more change a light switch in a wall, fix a toilet, or change a flat tire as go to the moon. They just don’t know anything, a lot of them. They have computer skills but they have no technical skills.”
"What’s the tallest mountain in the world? They don’t know. It’s Mount Everest. Where is it? It’s in Tibet. What’s the square root of nine? Three. What do you get when you mix red and white? Pink. Blue and yellow makes green. […] Common sense is not common.”
Favorite quotes:
“I like everything old except food.”
"Never been so happy."

What the what is what I said as well. Join us on our sloshy jazzy journey through life experiences and an insane slide guitar performance.

“Intuition was a big play in why I was there. I knew I had to be there I don’t know why, it was this inside thing that says you need to stay here no matter what. I know it’s going to be hard but you’re going to cry and you’re going to be poor and you’re going to be stealing shit […] I did everything I could to stay there and I did […] You need balls, like, in life.”

Violet is in the therapy chair.
It’s the loveseat on her porch, which is the hub of the house. Everything happens here. Dogs fighting, tequila drinking, nude sunbathing, smoking, Ke$ha karaoke, guitar playing, fort building, kid snuggles, vulture soaring…. Violet thrives on chaos - it’s her supercharger.

“There’s this new talk out right now about white supremacist thinking and part of that is goals and the whatcha! - that’s a slavery whip right there - and task master and getting stuff done and goals and the whole capitalist slavery thing.”

Suzanne is carrying a bag of shit.
It is a "shit bag" and she is using it to carry her shit in. When she grabbed it, I assumed it was for literal dog shit for the pup she is watching. However, she has just customized it as a purse.
We call this effortlessly chic.
Interview highlights:
+ the relevance of place to practice
+ where a medical anthropology degree lands you
+ the irrelevance of physical genetics
+ when to say "fuck you" to the signs
+ why many mirrors are a good thing
+ how it took a pandemic to take a break
+ the bitch about self-criticism
A taste:
"[...] everything can be redone and better. [...] everything needs to be redone, everything needs to be reincarnated as some new form, so even if you look at a part of the world and think oh someone’s already done that, it doesn’t matter, ever. [...] it needs to be redone again, even if that niche is already filled, if you have the impulse to do something, it needs to be done. You know? There’s a place for it."
"[...] Antonio Machado poem that says “Now that my ladder is gone, I’m down where all ladders start, in the foul rag and bone shop of the heart.” [...] I can so sense that feeling of the hitting rock bottom [...] something has to get to this place where everything has to get bad enough where you touch ground and things get true and you’re like well, here I am at the bottom and I don’t know anything and it’s all fucked."
Favorite quotes:
“Is this true?” - Byron Katie
“How can I have continuous creative response?”
