Does God change God's mind? Could we really influence God? Does God have feelings? Moses seemed to think so. Over and over again, God told Moses that God was surely going to destroy the Israelites, and Moses talked God out of it. Pray it like you stole it, Church. Remind God who God is, and remind her to act that way.

How do you pray for someone that you hate? How do you ask for God's mercy on someone that makes you really truly angry? Learn from an old Abrahamic prayer. It's hard, but we're working on it.

We started a new series tonight, going through prayers from the Hebrew Bible and applying them to our own lives (or, "stealing" them). Tonight, we learned the prayer of the oppressed, the groans of a people under the boot of their government, or affected by traumatic events in their own life. We don't always have the words, but God always hears. Thanks be to God.

Jesus just keeps asking of us. He asks a LOT of us, and it seems all that is offered in return is this elusive, ambiguous promise of a fuller life. Trusting that it's worth it can be tough.

Content consideration: brief domestic violence mention.
Dr. Lance Pape, professor of homiletics at Brite Divinity School (TCU), and spouse of our Lead Evangelist, took us through Matthew 19, Jesus' famous divorce doctrines. He called it a "mega dumpster fire" of a passage. His preliminary remarks were almost as good as his sermon, on what it really means when two become one flesh.

Rev Katie took us through Matthew 18 this week. The whole darn thing. She thinks maybe Jesus taught this sermon backwards, so she flipped it for us, and us these Stories of Mercy from the end to the beginning. Thanks be to God.

A bruised reed we will not break, and a smoldering wick we will not quench. We have to learn to be gentle, the way Jesus taught us. To learn the way of the one God sends, who does not overwhelm the timid, or exhaust the burnt-out.

Beware, the "yeast" of the Pharisees. Jesus call it "yeast" because it works its way into, through you, and it grows. It's hard to escape. Some of us are learning to check our own pharisaical tendencies, that have grown yeastily into us in the churches we were raised in.

Don't assume your shit don't stink! Leah Jordan brings a word about the ways in which we can all be like the Pharisees, and how we can focus more on improving ourselves than improving our neighbor.

Don't assume your own powerlessness. It's the last Sunday with Paul as Worship Architect and Nathan on cello. We just want three things: 1, for them, and everyone else, to stay, forever. 2, that the Nazis would see the light and stop being Nazis. 3, that Peter would not have gotten out of that boat all by himself. It's all we want, just those three. We feel really powerless because we can't get them. But we have a different kind of power, because when our Peter steps out of that boat, we have the power to step out with him. Thanks be to God.
