Today, on a very special episode of THE 1UPBEAT, we remember the legendary game composer Koichi Sugiyama, the grandfather of game music. Following his death at age 90 in 2021, Eric Silver will take you through a comprehensive look at his career starting in the late 50s, through the 80s as a composer for a game music career, and finally to the end of the 2010s.
In part 3 of this 4-part series, Koichi Sugiyama cements himself as a composer for video games, and begins working with other companies outside of Enix. This episode will follow his career into the late 1990s as he closes off his work as a film composer.
