We chat with Fernando about MeerKAT and the incredible science it is doing. In particular, we discuss the recent discovery of enormous balloon-like structures that tower hundreds of light-years above and below the centre of our galaxy.

Caused by a phenomenally energetic burst that erupted near the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole a few million years ago, the MeerKAT radio bubbles are shedding light on long-standing galactic mysteries.

Special Guest: This week we are airing Fraser's pre-recorded interview with Dr. Olivier Witasse, Project Scientist on the JUICE mission.

Olivier studied fundamental physics and astrophysics at the universities of Paris XI (Orsay) and Lyon between 1990 and 1996. He obtained a PhD at the University of Grenoble in 2000.

In 1995, he successfully completed the exams to become a teacher of Physics and Chemistry. He taught physics during his military service, and during his PhD at the university.

He joined ESA as a staff member in 2003, after a two-year research fellowship at ESTEC and a four-month post doc at the Royal Observatory of Belgium. In 2015, Olivier joined the JUICE project.

As usual, we’ll start by saying what the formula states – and then we’ll try and explain what the heck it all means. So, Maxwell-Faraday equation states how an electric current, or more specifically the electromotive force that drives an electrical current, can be induced by an adjacent magnetic field that changes with time. But, literally, and even more inscrutably, what the formula really states is that the curl of an electric field represented by an upside-down triangle multiplied by E is in the opposite direction to the change in magnetic flux over time – which is represented by a minus sign in front of dB over dt.
