Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006.
Today's 2 topics:
- Dr. Karen J. Meech of the University of Hawaii has studied comet C/2014 S3 (Pan-STARRS) which appears to be a very old asteroid in a comet's orbit in the Oort cloud. It's one that hasn't been "baked" by long exposure to the Sun.
- Dr. Adam Frank of the University of Rochester & Dr. Woodruff Sullivan of the University of Washington have published a paper ( https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.3851 ) addressing the odds of technologically capable alien life appearing in a given volume of space. They posit that it's possible that we are the first such species in a cube 1,000 LY on a side.

A team from Penn State University, Italy and all over the world used the Chandra X-ray Space Observatory to study the cosmos by looking at a type of light called X-rays. X-rays reveal the very energetic and exotic objects in space, like colliding stars and black holes. A picture recently released by the Chandra Space Observatory team and studied by that team from Penn State shows us what you can see in a small part of the night sky, about 2/3 the size of the full Moon, if you look at the X-rays coming from it.

This podcast celebrates the 13 year anniversary of the landing of Opportunity on Mars. I still remember the night she landed vividly. After launch in July 0f 2003, the big night finally came. I was standing at the planetarium’s console, watching the control room at the Jet Propulsion Lab in California, eating peanuts, and listening as the landing milestones were called out: “parachute deployed”, “airbags inflated”, “we’re bouncing around on Mars!”

Human beings are bad at so many things. But we're particularly terrible at understanding probability in any rational way. We underestimate, overestimate and generally mess up probability. We're gonna try and fix it today, but we will surely fail.

Today's 2 topics:
- Carson Fuls discovered 2016 HD3, which will make 53 close approaches to Earth in the next 100 years.
- Voyager 1 took the famous "Pale blue dot" photo over 25 years ago. New telescopes will enable us to look for pale blue dots around other stars! A spectrum that includes traces of oxygen would be even better, of course.

From 2010.
The first thing you notice in reviewing the literature about the solar cycle is that the math doesn't work. Here in 2010 we are just a year into cycle number 24 and each cycle has a duration of around 11 years - and isn't the Sun like 5 billion years old?
