Um… Well, no. They aren't.
Consider this:
When early explorers first set out from Europe headed west across the Atlantic Ocean, many people thought the world was flat. They worried that if you sailed far enough, you would drop off the Earth into nothing.

Paul Hill, Ralph Wilkins and Jenifer Millard host. Damien Phillips and John Wildridge produce.
Summary of content: What to look out, and up, for in September.
Our highlights of this month’s skies with the planet on offer to observers and imagers:
- Mercury & Venus in the late evening or early morning
- Mars & Saturn – with a nice conjunction with the Moon and star Antares
- Neptune & Uranus on offer in Aquarius & Pisces
The largest asteroid, Vesta, will be passing through the constellation Gemini into Cancer this month and asteroid 2 Pallas can still be found in the constellation Equuelus.
Next up is the meteor showers and, following the magnificent Persieds last month, September has:
The Alpha Aurigids peaking on 1st September
the Epsilon Persieds peaking on 9th September
Then we each take a deep sky pick from our list of favourites for this time of year:
Ralph – The Owl Custer in Cassiopeia
Paul – globular cluster, Messier 2 in Aquarius
Jeni – The Andromeda Galaxy in the constellation Andromeda
And we finish this sky guide with September’s moon phases.

In which constellation does our Sun belong? If any, can you please provide the constellation name?
Before we answer the question, let’s have a little bit of an exploration about constellations.
What is a constellation?
If you look up at the sky on a clear night in a remote area, you will see an overwhelming number of stars. The question is, can you recognize the star you see today when you see it next week, next month or even next year?

From May 28, 2007:
Huge stars become black holes, and small stars become white dwarfs. But medium-sized stars can become neutron stars; exotic objects that overcome the nuclear force holding protons and electrons apart. What was once the size of a star is compressed down to only a few dozen kilometers across.

Modern all-sky surveys are enabling new kinds of discoveries by allowing statistical studies to trace out the locations of hidden planets, pressures, and exoplanets. The most exciting of these discoveries is Planet 9, a new world predicted by the orbits of icy Kuiper Belt Objects and defined by where it isn’t in all-sky surveys. It follows on the heels of projects that map out invisible dark matter and describe Dark Energy’s expansion of the universe. This talk will look at how massive data collections have allowed us to detect these and other things that can’t be seen, and how future data sets will make today’s Big Data seem small.

What is a planet? This sounds like it should have a simple answer, but only a few years ago this question was giving astronomers a headache!
When they finally came up with an answer it had big consequences: The number of planets in our Solar System went from nine back to eight!
The planet that was kicked out of the club is Pluto.

Dr. Carrie Nugent (staff scientist, IPAC/Caltech) hosts. Our special guest for this podcast is Dr. Solange Ramirez, an astronomer at the Infrared Processing & Analysis Center at Caltech. Dr. Solange Ramirez visits the show to talk galaxies, supermassive black holes, and the gravity that ties them together.
