We at 365 Days of Astronomy would like to apologize for the low quality audio in today's program. It was recorded with the on-camera mic of a video camera and has a very high "noise floor" and may be hard to understand. In this episode, "TelescopeMan" Joe Lalumina records Dennis Webb's presentation on the Arp Peculiar Galaxies; at the June 2011 meeting of the Texas Astronomical Society of Dallas, TX.
Mr. Webb is a NASA engineer and observer with more than 25 years of experience exploring the night sky. If the name is familiar to deep sky fans, it might be because he & Jeff Kanipe also teamed up to produce the Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies: A Chronicle and Observer’s Guide in 2006.

Every now and then we look up and we see bright fiery balls falling from the sky. Don't panic! (Google Douglas Adams for that… ;) These are just fireballs. Sometimes they leave trails, sometimes they explode, and sometimes they survive all the way to the ground.

KELT-South is a robotic survey of the southern sky that is designed to detect transiting planets orbiting bright stars. Dr. David James' research interests include Wide-field photometric and spectroscopy, surveys of Galactic open clusters; evolution of stellar rotation and internal mixing; extra-solar planet properties; instrumentation and the age of stars. He works at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. If you are interested in participating in the KELT-S citizen science project, you can contact him at [email protected]

The Universe is filled with many galaxies that have perfectly uniform shapes. But the uneven S-shape of the galaxy in this 2006 picture in today's album artwork is messy, like a graffiti artist has hurriedly drawn it by hand!
How did this spiral galaxy end up with this weird shape? Astronomers think that a long time ago, another galaxy tugged at its spiral arms unevenly, making one arm longer than the other.

Summary of content:
The Discussion: Exam season is well underway for Jeni, Paul & Ralph ran the AstroCamp dark sky star party in Wales and the jet stream causes frustration for sky watchers in the UK. But the big event last month was the transit of the planet Mercury with a full day of observing this phenomenon for many parts of the world.
The News: Rounding up the space and astronomy news this month we have:
- A possible new particle that threatens the foundation of physics discovered at CERN
- Is the life-hunting Exomars 2 ever going to get off the ground?
- 1,284 exoplanets discovered: 550 are rocky, 100 are earth sized, with 9 in their habitable zones
- The May 2016 transit of Mercury and witnessing the black drop effect
- DIY carbon nanotubes among 56 patents released by NASA and space elevators
- SpaceX make Paul look silly (again)
Woobusters: Continuing our quest to debunk the myths and conspiracy theories that persist in every dark corner of the news and the internet. This month’s topic, picked at random from Paul’s Big Hat of Woo, is Flat Earth (heaven help us!)
The Interview: For the interview this month we welcome the University of Oxford’s Professor Daniela Bortoletto who helped build the Large Hadron Collider and researches the findings of the world’s largest atom smasher.
Q&A: Loved the astrophotography verses visual conversation. Maybe you could talk about what astronomy set up you use and what you prefer, ie telescope type?

Title: Stellar Winds and Mass Loss in the Late Stages of Stellar Evolution
Abstract: Our galaxy is physically and chemically shaped by the lives and deaths of stars. In this talk, we'll see how some of these stars contribute to molding our galaxy. We'll then learn about how we can use the later phases of these stars, and their physical phenomena, to tell us more about the structure of our galaxy and its chemical evolution.
Background reading on light and stellar evolution would be good. I've written a couple of blog posts about those:
