We all enjoy beautiful, multicolored sunsets. But what causes the brilliant oranges, pinks and purples that we see, and why does it change from day to day and season to season?

The search for aliens raises an interesting question — what if aliens are searching for us, too? Do we want them to find us? Hiding an entire planet is not an easy task, but 2 scientists have thought of a way to do it using powerful lasers. If we wanted to, we could stop aliens from seeing the Sun become dimmer when the Earth passes in front of it by shining a very powerful laser at them to make up for the sunlight lost by having the Earth in the way.

SPHERES is a testbed for formation flying by satellites the theories and calculations that coordinate the motion of multiple bodies maneuvering in microgravity. To achieve this inside the ISS cabin, bowling-ball-sized spheres perform various maneuvers (or protocols), with one to three spheres operating simultaneously.
Bowling in space! Those bowling balls were actually satellites used to test autonomous maneuvers. The investigation developed modular algorithms, on-board navigation, position and attitude estimators, fault detection, and a closed-loop delta velocity mixer using real-time measures to control thrusters.

A physics professor at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in British Columbia, Canada, Dr. Trottier ( @MrStarryNights ) has recently devoted his time to the development of SFU's unique Astronomy public outreach program. In the heart of SFU's main campus is a "Science Courtyard" a high-profile public space devoted to astronomy and anchored by a state-of-the art outreach and teaching observatory. You can learn more about this amazing program here:

During a visit to Geneva in September 2016, the Awesome Astronomy team stopped looking out into the universe for a while to delve into the impossibly tiny world of subatomic particles and fundamental forces that fuels the heartbeat of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
Dr. Steven Goldfarb, an experimental particle physicist from the University of Michigan, led a tour of the ATLAS Control Room, about 80 metres above the largest and most advanced engineering experiment the world has ever seen – the Large Hadron Collider. Then we sat down to enjoy a light lunch and discuss the ground-breaking work, detections and knowledge building that only CERN can accomplish.
Naturally, we also delve into the big issues in astronomy today – such as dark matter, the matter/antimatter imbalance and extra dimensions, all of which are being explored by CERN.
So, for anyone who's excited by the frontiers of physics or puzzled by what CERN is or does, we've recorded a special podcast extra to shed some light on the impossibly complex and tantalisingly exciting world of particle physics, right on the very cutting edge.
This podcast extra should explain in simple terms:
- What are the Large Hadron Collider and CERN
- The International collaboration required
- The significance of the Higgs Boson
- Why gravity causes us so many problems
- The frontiers of our understanding of the universe
- The search for unified fundamental forces, extra dimensions and exotic new matter
With special thanks to CERN and Dr Steve Goldfarb.

CMB cosmology is currently undergoing a data rich epoch, with measurements on small scales from experiments like The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and it polarization instrument ACTPol adding to measurements on larger scales by Planck, WMAP and most recently BICEP. I will contextualize the measurements and present constraints on parameters from the observations at 148 and 217 GHz respectively by ACT from three years of observations. I will discuss the model of secondary anisotropies that are needed to fit the data in small scales, including contributions from both the thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, Poisson distributed and correlated infrared sources, radio sources and a term modeling the correlation between the thermal SZ effect and the Cosmic Infrared Background. I'll discuss my recent re-analysis of data from the Planck satellite, and discuss a re-analysis of the Planck data, where we found that the 217GHz x 217GHz detector set spectrum used in the Planck analysis is responsible for some of the tension between the Planck parameters and other astronomical measurements. We show evidence suggesting residual systematics in the detector set spectra used in the Planck likelihood code, which is substantially reduced for our spectra. We put these results in context of the recent BICEP results. I'll highlight the recent ACTPol results, and highlight what we might expect from the upcoming Planck polarization results.

Come celebrate science (and help us fund and do science) during our 36-hour Hangoutathon. During this event, we invite you to race to map the worlds; Mercury, the Moon, Mars (yes, we’ll have Mars!), and cold distant Vesta. While you do science, we’ll take you on a tour around the world as we follow the terminator to Global Star Party events taking place around the world. We’ll also be joined by a myriad of guests. (Stay tuned for complete listings!)
