- Recently my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Carson Fuls discovered his third comet, Comet C/2018 R4 (Fuls). It is now on its way back into deep space. Given the climate change Earth is experiencing it is hard to predict the state of our planet and humanity when Comet Fuls returns in 7,500 AD.

- In the fictional Star Trek series, Vulcan, Spock's home planet was imagined to orbit the A component of the triple star system 40 Eridani [Eri-dani ]. Recently astronomers using the Dharma Planet Survey 50 inch telescope on Mt. Lemmon, Arizona have discovered that there is indeed an actual planet, named HD26965 b, with mass of 8.5 times that of Earth orbiting the star 40 Eridani A once every 42.38 days.

In 2018 astronomers witnessed an intense explosion far more powerful than the average supernova. 10 to 100 times brighter! This event was the first of a new class of objects called Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs). In this podcast, Dr. Ashley Chrimes discusses LFBOTs and a recently discovered event that is quite different than previously seen LFBOTs.  

Bios: 

- Rob Sparks is in the Communications, Education and Engagement group at NSF’s NOIRLab in Tucson, Arizona.

- Dr. Ashley Chrimes is currently a European Space Agency research fellow, based at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC). His research interests are in astrophysical transients, such as gamma-ray bursts, fast blue optical transients and fast radio bursts. His work aims to unravel the progenitors of these transients through their host galaxies and mutli-wavelength emission.

For decades now, our planetary science news cycles have been dominated by Mars. Mars is relatively close, and we have a lot of experience landing there and science goals to pursue. But it has left our other closest neighbor, Venus, off the mission list. That is, until 2021, when NASA and the European Space Agency announced three separate but complimentary missions to that hellscape world. 

And now, one of those missions - VERITAS - is threatened to be completely mothballed before even really beginning. Later on in the show, Beth Johnson will interview deputy principal investigator, Darby Dyar, about why VERITAS is suddenly on the chopping block, what this means for planetary exploration, and how the public can help change NASA’s mind. Keeping your house in order.

– Do we have the ability to measure the exact amount of heat arriving at the Earth from the Sun?

Here on Earth, we often talk about light as being what we can see and heat as being what we can feel. But, really any wavelength of electromagnetic radiation can raise the temperature of something that absorbs it.

– Are astronauts allowed to take their own tech gear aboard the ISS?

There are no absolute rules on this. With most ISS astronauts also undertaking research work, some have been approved to take their own tech gear but this is probably more the exception than the rule.

One of the most exciting recent discoveries in astronomy has been the existence of planets around other stars.  Called exoplanets, they vary wildly in their characteristics, appearance and behavior.

Most of the over 5000 exoplanets discovered so far are in orbit around other stars, some whiz around their home sun in a matter of only days while others have orbits that last decades or hundred of years.

But there is another interesting class of exoplanets that do not have a home sun.  These rogue worlds travel the distance between the stars, they live in the cold, dark interstellar regions of the galaxy.

14th – ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE – Saturday is a great day for North America, which experiences a rare annular solar eclipse where the Moon, further away in its orbit than average, is smaller in our view, aligns with the Sun, but doesn’t cover it entirely, leaving a ring of fire. Wear your eclipse glasses, try to travel to the path where you’ll see the ring, or hang out where you are and witness the Moon partially the Sun.
