New South Wales hospitals are facing a crisis that transcends simple logistics—it has become a full-blown emergency. Currently, over 1,100 patients across the state are effectively "trapped" in public hospital beds.
These individuals, primarily aged care and NDIS patients, have been medically cleared for discharge. However, they remain stuck in clinical wards because aged care facilities are at capacity and NDIS waitlists continue to swell.
While the Federal Government has pledged an additional $1 billion over five years, state leaders and medical professionals have labeled the offer "underwhelming" given the scale of the deficit.
To break down the severity of the situation and discuss what is actually needed to move these patients into appropriate care, Bill speaks with Dr. Kathryn Austin, President of the NSW Australian Medical Association (AMA).
