On this episode of The Accessibility Advantage I'm excited to bring you a conversation with Jason Barnard.

We did discuss how AI is effecting the development of search engines; and how you can use knowledge of these coming conditions to influence how all the various online bots see you and your company.

You should know that some of my conversation with him is personal.

I asked and received some very helpful feedback about my many brands and what is the best way for me to go forward. But I think you can take a lot of great nuggets from the answers I got using my life as an example.

Most Important Points

These are the most important concepts that you will learn during the interview.

1: The search engines and the AI bots should be thought of as children who need to be educated about who you are, what you do, and why they should care.

The increasing number of bots need to be reeducated if you and your mission have changed over time like mine has.

And the longer you wait to start teaching the bots what you want them to know, the harder it will get to change how the search engines and AI users see you.

2: The Kalicube method of Claim, Frame, and Prove.

This is how Jason has built his amazing brands, and how he has helped so many other companies grow their brands online.

First, you make a claim about yourself or your business.

Then you frame it to educate a certain audience.

Then you offer proof in the form of your content or the content of others who appreciate you or have benefitted from your work.

Hello again, I hope you are doing as well as possible.

This time on The Accessibility Advantage I am blessed to have a conversation with Jenna Udenberg.

She shared about growing up in the North Shore area of Minnesota and being involved in lots of outdoor activities growing up.

Then she talked about being diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, and how that eventually lead to her living her life in a wheel chair from the age of eight.

She spoke about how she learned to advocate for herself from an early age, and how this effected her college years.

Her desire to leave places better than she found them lead to major improvements for accessibility by the time she graduated.

I loved also hearing about personal experiences at camps or events for many other people with disabilities.

I appreciated her admitting that after college she hit a dry spell as an advocate due to exhaustion from constantly having to push to be heard and have your needs met.

It was great hearing about how she found the passion to get back in the game so to speak thanks to winning The 2017 Blandin Foundation Community Leader. followed by other prestigious fellowships.

Along the way you will get a glimpse of what it is like living in a wheel chair. And I especially loved her metaphor about how people have different chairs just like you would have different shoes based on the occasion.

Finally, we talked a lot about the challenges of enjoying outdoor activities like hiking, walking trails, rock climbing, fishing, swimming, etc when you have a disability.

She makes a great case for how access for wheel chair users isn't just about getting in the door. It's about the quality of life and ability to pursue personal interests inside that door.

And we talked about how her community has improved its appeal to tourists who enjoy outdoor activities because of their commitment to continuing to make more areas more accessible.

She is a great story teller. And I have to admit I forgot to ask my just for Max question.

I used to love going fishing with my dad, but it became less fun as I lost my vision because I couldn't see the float bobbing on the water sink to know I had a bite.

Also some of the best fishing in our area is off of coastal jetties which are difficult to navigate with low vision.

I bet there are places where she lives I could go fishing again. And I bet she would have a solution for my fishing problem.

Solutions finding is one of those things us differently abled get good at over time.

Today, I am writing to share the latest episode of my podcast The Accessibility Advantage.

This time, I am speaking with Missy Sue Mastel of Masstel Communications.

She oversees the financial function of non-profit organizations. She also has a passion for inclusivity, accessibility, and equality for everyone.

We began our conversation by talking about her background as a CPA for for-profit companies where she wasn’t personally satisfied. And how this lead to her moving to working with nonprofits where she teaches them to focus on the value they offer the world.

Her work with nonprofits lead to her exposure to many people with disabilities or with different abilities as she prefers to call them.

We had a lively discussion about the difference between the meanings attached to disabled verses differently abled.

How disabled means different or foreign to a lot of people where differently abled speaks to challenges everyone may face in their lifetimes.

We talked about how differently abled also makes it easier to reach people who have physical, mental, and emotional problems related to aging.

As many people have the same issues as disabled people when growing older but will never identify as being disabled.

We also talked about how changing the discussion could help reach employers and online developers.

Her Book For Nonprofits

Then Missy transitioned into speaking about her new book Generation Giving Back, Your Guide To Managing The Modern Facets Of A Sustainable Nonprofit.

I apologized for butchering the subtitle, but she told me she liked my version much better.

For those of you who don't know, I don't have access to a braille printer or a digital braille display. So, I tend to have to memorize the items I plan to bring up with a guest.

She addressed how being a successful nonprofit is much harder than most people think it is. Especially if you ask people in the for-profit sector.

She spoke a little about KPI, key performance indicators which I think is very helpful to anyone regardless of your organization size, structure, or purpose.

That is the fact that most adaptive technology users like myself do not have regular access to a mouse.

Often, we are frustrated or even made angry by not being able to begin or complete an action online because an important button wasn't properly formatted.

I hope that listening to this short lesson will encourage you to start designing your sites for keyboard access first.

Why Share These Tutorials?

I have been educating people about accessibility since starting my first website brokering used amusement park & carnival equipment in 2007 when the lack of accessibility forced me to teach myself to code html in order to get my site online.

Things are so much better now, but accessibility is still something left out by too many website designers or developers.

I'm hoping that by sharing content like this you will see accessibility isn't so scary.

And you will begin the process of improving accessibility on your own sites or advocating for the sites where you work to be made more inclusive.

What Is CRM?

For those of you who do not know, CRM stands for customer or client relationship management.

Their software, and other programs like it; help businesses keep track of the emails, phone calls, text messages, etc sent to clients during the course of doing business with someone. And they help remind you to follow up with those people.

Theirs isn't the only CRM that is thought to be highly accessible for people with disabilities, but they are the one I found first and the one I like.

What Will You Learn?

In my interview with Tyler you will learn how they became interested in being more inclusive through the efforts of their employees, how they overcame their challenges by deciding to find solutions, and how they have benefitted from embracing inclusion of all people especially those with disabilities.

We talked mostly about digital accessibility, but we also touched on inclusion in the work force and how they overcame the natural fear and overwhelm that is part of making a work place more inclusive of disabled people.

Hello friends,

I have decided to embrace my role as an expert on digital accessibility.

I have spent over 15 years educating website owners about my needs and the needs of people like me.

And recently, most of my income has come from writing, consulting, and speaking on the subject of digital accessibility.

Along with this discovery came the realization that there aren't many people talking about accessibility from my point of view.

That being emphasizing how accessibility and inclusion isn't just the right thing to do but it is in the best interests of every business, nonprofit, and government agency.
