TEN: Be Content
Exodus 20:17

Main idea: God wants us to desire his provision.

Contentedness can keep us from sin (Exodus 20:17).

Contentedness makes us more capable of serving others (Acts 20:32-35; 2 Cor. 9:6-15).

Contentedness makes us more like Christ (Philippians 4:10-14).

TEN: With Honor
Exodus 20:12

Main idea: We honor God with obedience to the Father, as Jesus did.

The parent/child relationship is symbolic of the God/man relationship (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1).

Honor is given in obedience (Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:5).

Obedience carries obligations of conduct (Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:4-9).

Obedience results in God’s promised blessings (Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:2-3).

TEN: Keep It Holy
Exodus 20:8-11

Main Idea:


“Sabbath” means “rest.”
Busyness is the enemy of rest (Exodus 20:8).
Rest is a necessity for everyone (Exodus 20:9-10).
Rest reminds us of who we are and who God is (Exodus 20:11).

Main idea: Those who claim to belong to God but do not live obediently misuse God’s name.

We must not disrespect the name of the Lord.
We must not misrepresent the name of the Lord.
We must not unfaithfully take the name of the Lord.

Exodus 20:4-6

Main idea: Nothing in our lives should come before our devotion to God.

We must not worship the image of God, but God himself, in Spirit and in truth.
* Images misrepresent God.
* Worshiping images corrupts our knowledge of God.
* We must worship God in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:24).

We must not put anything in the place of God in our lives.
* We must not worship idols.
* We can defeat idolatry by redeeming the idols.
