The Context: Jesus was teaching about obedience.

The Content: Rejoicing ensues when what was lost is found.

The Meaning:
God counts in ones.
Jesus left Heaven to save us.
Our obedience is to seek like Jesus.

The Parable of the Talents/Minas
Matt. 25:14-30; Luke 19:11-27

The Context: Jesus was teaching about faithfulness and end times.

The Content: A man who was leaving on a long journey divvied up his possessions and entrusted them to various servants. When he returned, he found that some had multiplied his possessions while others had squandered it.

The Meaning: Faithful servants will be blessed and honored while unfaithful servants will be punished and rejected.
* Those who prove themselves faithful will be entrusted with more.
* When the Lord returns, will we be found faithful?

The Parable of the Two Builders

Main idea: A solid faith comes from hearing and obeying Jesus.

The Context: Jesus is preaching to a great crowd.

The Content: Two men build houses. One on solid rock and one on unstable sand.

The Meaning:
One who follows Jesus’s teaching is wise.
One who rejects Jesus’s teaching is foolish.

The Sheep and the Goats
Matthew 25:31-46

Main idea: God expects for us to be genuine.

The Context: Jesus encountered a fig tree that bore no fruit.

The Content: Jesus taught this parable within weeks - possibly even days - of His encounter with the fig tree.

The Meaning: Jesus desires that we be people, and churches, of substance.
* People of substance rely on who Jesus is, not who they are.

The Wedding Banquet/Feast

We have been given an invitation to a relationship with God (Matt. 22:8-10; Luke 14:21-23).

Our relationship with God must take precedence (Matt. 22:3-5; Luke 14:17-20).

The denial of God’s invitation has consequences (Matt. 22:11-14; Luke 14:24).

The Wicked Tenants
Matthew 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19

Main idea: God desires our obedience.

The Context: The chief priests and elders inquired of Jesus regarding his authority and paying taxes to Caesar.

The Content: A vineyard owner experienced his servants and his son being mistreated and rejected by the tenants of his vineyard.

The Meaning: Those who squander God’s gifts will be punished and those who honor God’s gifts will be exalted (Matt. 21:43).

The Parables of the Mustard Seed & Leaven

The Context: In each Gospel account, Jesus was teaching a crowd.

The Content: A seemingly insignificant thing has a substantial impact.

The Meaning: The kingdom of God starts small but grows large.
God’s kingdom is not like what was expected.
A little faith brings about great results.

The Parable of the Sower
Mark 4:3-9, 13-20 (Matthew 13:3-23; Luke 8:5-15)

Main idea: Those that believe will hear the truth of Jesus’s teachings.

* The sower represents God (Mark 4:3, 14).
* The seed is the Gospel.
* The soil represents people.
* The birds represent temptation (Mark 4:4, 15).
* The rocky ground represents trials (Mark 4:5-6, 16-17).
* The thorns represent worry (Mark 4:7, 18-19).
* The heart that believes is fertile soil for the Gospel to grow (Mark 4:8, 19-20).
* Those who do not understand this parable will not understand the Gospel (Mark 4:13).

Main idea: Jesus took our punishment for sin upon himself.


Christ is our salvation (Hebrews 9:26).

Christ is our propitiation (1 John 4:10).

Christ is our reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

Christ is our redemption (Mark 10:45).
