The standards of the world stand opposed to God's purposes and his people (7:1-8).

The father is sovereignty victorious (7:9-12).

Christ reigns in glory (7:13-15).

Application:
Trusting human government for order and peace is a fool’s errand.
Trust fully in the sovereign power of the Father.
Submit to Christ who reigns in glory.

Matthew 5:5

Main idea: Following Christ requires humility.

Meekness is revealed in us through submission.

Meekness makes us more like Jesus.

Meekness comes with a reward.

Blessed are Those Who Mourn Matthew 5:4

Main idea: Brokenness over sin results in sorrow for sin.

“Men have tears to shed for other things - but have none to spare for their sins.” -Thomas Watson

Spiritual mourning is evidence of conviction and repentance.

Spiritual mourning serves a purpose.

Spiritual mourning is not without hope.

Spiritual mourning results in God’s comfort.

Blessed are the Poor in Spirit Matthew 5:3

Main idea: Coming to God requires brokenness over our sin.

To be “poor in spirit” means to be broken over sin and fully aware of our need for a Savior.

Without spiritual poverty we are incapable of receiving God's grace.

The spiritually poor man… is separated from himself (Psalm 131:2); is dependent upon Jesus (Philippians 4:13); is always aware of his shortcomings (2 Cor. 12:9-10); is submissive to God's correction (Galatians 2:20; 1 Corinthians 15:10); is much in prayer (Colossians 4:12); receives salvation on God’s terms (Philippians 4:12); is eternally grateful (1 Timothy 1:12-17).

The reward for spiritual poverty is a place in God’s kingdom.

Main idea: God deserves our best.

God accepts those who turn to Him (1:2-5).

Our corruption is evidenced by our disobedience (1:6-2:16).

God’s judgment serves to refine us (2:17-3:5).

Faithfulness to God requires our best effort (3:6-4:6).

God’s love is for everyone and it can not be earned, only given and accepted (8:1-23).

In the end, many will come to God (9:2-13:21).

Main idea: Our obedience reveals our priorities.

What we give our hearts and time to reveals our priorities (1:2-6; 2:10-19).

We can not lose the Lord’s favor, but we can miss his blessing (1:7-14; 2:4-5).

We are either working toward God’s end or our own (2:1-9).
