August 13, 2025Irish Activists Helping to Organise New Flotilla Trying to Get Aid to Gaza - 13/08/2025Irish activists are helping to organise a new international flotilla aiming to deliver aid to Gaza and break Israel’s blockade as the number of civilians killed through violence or starvation continues to rise.The flotilla is set to launch from Spain on 31 August and stop at Tunisia and other countries on 4 September before sailing towards Gaza, with people from more than 44 countries participating.It comes as a joint statement from 24 countries and the EU denouncing the “famine unfolding before our eyes” in Gaza as Israel severely limits the amount of aid getting into Gaza, leaving people to suffer without enough food or other essential supplies like medicines.Rob Leonard from The Global Movement To Gaza (GMTG) joined us on The Agenda this morning to tell us more about this. There was all sorts of rubbish dumped late last week, and local people and the council are once again left to sort the mess out.Cllr Byrne said, "The dumping behind Bryanstown shops was yet another shocking incident of dumping by individuals who simply don't care for their community or the environment around them. August 13, 2025Drogheda Mayor Criticises Delay on Alcohol Health Warning Labels - 13/08/2025The government’s decision to delay enforcement of alcohol health warning labels on bottles and cans is “a clear failure to prioritise public health over industry pressure,” according to Drogheda Mayor, Michelle Hall.Cllr. Hall, a member of the HSE Regional Health Forum spoke of her “deep disappointment at the Government’s decision to delay the enforcement of alcohol harm labelling on bottles and cans — a key public health measure passed into law under the Public Health (Alcohol) Act.”She highlighted a research paper published in 2019 showing that County Louth has higher than average mortality for all ages due to alcohol related causes (65.5 per 100,000 population, compared to a National rate of 58.6 per 100,000).Councillor Hall joined us on The Agenda this morning to talk to us some more about this. August 13, 2025Louth Funfair Owner Opens Up About Standoff with Louth County Council Ending up in High Court - 13/08/2025The fate of a Co Louth funfair which is a part of Blackrock village’s traditional August 15th celebrations was determined in the High Court on Tuesday.Louth County Council had granted a three-day licence for the funfair, run by local businessman Killian Allen, and when he signalled his determination to run the popular event for nine days, they indicated that they would issue legal proceedings.Mr Allen argued that the funfair “operates strictly within the law” and the Freestyle Amusement Funfair set up last weekend with the intention of operating for nine days.Killian joined us on The Agenda this morning to tell us all about happened in court on Tuesday and branded the decision by the court as a "huge milestone" for Irish tradition and families like his. August 12, 2025Ireland Records First Cholera Case in Over a Decade as ‘Exotic’ Illnesses on the Rise - 12/08/2025Clinics and hospitals are dealing with a surge in exotic illnesses, including the first case of cholera recorded in over a decade.Cases of leprosy, dengue fever, malaria, Zika, giardiasis and West Nile fever have grown, largely due to increased global travel.Dengue fever cases alone have increased by 145pc in just 12 months.The latest report from the Health Protection and Surveillance Centre (HPSC) revealed that while detections of such exotic diseases fell by almost 90pc during the pandemic, the resumption of foreign travel since 2022 has led to a rise in case numbers.Ralph Reigel from The Irish Independent spoke to us this morning on The Agenda about this.
