On today’s show, Ali and Macara started the show off with a discussion about the importance of making time for activities that allow one to escape. They both mentioned how reading serves this purpose for them, and Ali added that sports allows the same thing for him.

Macara and Ali discussed the first two chapters of “High Road Leadership”. Based on initial impressions, Macara described finding some of the principles and values discussed to be obvious in terms of human decency. Ali provided a contrasting perspective, mentioning that in order to get into business concepts, one must start with fundamentals and qualities. Additionally, Ali mentioned the traditionally self-serving nature of the corporate world, as well as its apparent inability to adapt and consider or retain employees. Ali also shared his preference for the independent broadcasting he does, and explained why he still enjoys reading books about business.

Continuing from last week’s conversation on the book, Macara found the book interesting, but also mentioned that it had a self-help undertone presented through a fictional story. Also, Ali and Macara discussed how one of the main themes seemed to be how one choice can ripple outwards to many aspects of life. Both Ali and Macara provided predictions on the book’s ending; Macara anticipated a resolution involving acceptance of a life, while Ali suggested there might be consequences resulting from a final choice.

On today’s show, Ali and Macara continued last week’s discussion of “The Answer Is…”. Macara found Trebek’s book interesting, noting it’s not necessarily a cohesive story, making it easy to pick up and put down. Also, Macara noted a passage about Trebek’s personal definition of courage, which lead to a conversation about different perspectives on courage; whether it’s how one bears something or a conscious choice. They agreed that the public’s view of courage might differ from an individual’s personal definition.

Ali and Macara discussed rating books, with Ali explaining that he bases his ratings off a combination of the book’s content and how he felt about it while reading. In contrast, Macara explained that she is sparing with 5 star reviews. Both agreed that ratings are generally subjective. They then discussed rating non-fiction and not allowing personal disagreements on perspectives to factor too heavily into ratings.

Macara mentioned the many annotations she had made in the book so far, bringing up a particular note about disappointment and happiness as it related to the concept of the library in the book. Ali brought up the point that one can’t be happy with where they are at and be disappointed. During this discussion, Ali also made the connection between “The Midnight Library” and “The Hunger Games”, as they are both works of fiction that deal with societal issues. In response to this, Macara compared the narrative perspectives of each book and how they both come from a single character’s point of view.
