This podcast topic came from a recent rule that was applied at my CrossFit gym (StoneWay CrossFit in Seattle).
For months, I had been secretly testing something during my advanced athlete training sessions.
I didn’t tell anyone what I was doing, and it didn’t seem to matter.
What I was testing… could I eliminate complaining from our advanced athletes class, and in-turn, make those classes a more fun, positive place to be.
I truly believe that positive people get more out of life. More happiness, more fulfillment, and even more CrossFit gains! Yep, more gains!
Here’s what I did… You don’t always just wake up, and have everything go your way, and feel great, and have the sun shining. I mean, some days are like that. But, how can we set our moods, and have everyday be an 8-10 out of 10..?
I’ve done it by actually deciding what I’m going to focus on. It’s not easy, but when you control what you focus on, you can literally decide how you want to feel.
And, this is what I’ve done in my own life in order to feel good, pretty much everyday. Do I have down days… yes, but I view those days as challenges to sharpen my axe (as Misfit Athletics says). And, you know what… those down days come less and less. In fact, I can remember the last one I had. it was two Sundays ago.
So, knowing that I can shift the way that I’m feeling from sour to power, I wanted to see if I could create that same shift for those in my advanced athletes class.
Here are the tools that I used:Excitement: When you see someone for the first time that day, you act like you are excited to see them.
Now, you don’t have to throw on a corny smile (unless you feel like it), but you truly express an emotion towards people that they can feel that you are excited to see them. It’s AMAZING how this can shift someone’s mood.
The way I do this: When someone enters the gym, I always yell out their name, and acknowledge them with high energy.
Leading: Next, I would lead people to talk about what was fun, happy, or interesting for them.
They could be having the worst day ever, but I would look at the workout they are about to do, and redirect their energy towards positivity.
For example: this person just got fired, but they came into the gym for support (and to actually feel better). So, they are in a bad mood, right.
Well, I look at the workout that they are about to do and suggest that it’s a back squat day, and they are going to be able to take that pissed energy, and direct it towards crushing the back squats today.
Or, we get to do a super fun workout that has 100 wall balls in it. I love wall balls!!
You are taking your excitement, and leading them in the same direction.
Redirection: You figure out why someone is in a pissy mood, and you redirect their energy into something good.
They just got fired at work, and you redirect them into thinking about having a job that is even more fun than the job they just got fired from. In all truth, the job wasn’t really that fun. If it was, they wouldn’t have been fired.
Here’s what I found…First, I need to note that you (as the leader) need to have control over your own mood before you can shift environments like this. So, get to work!
Enough about that, here’s what I found after spending… maybe 6 months doing this.
People started to completely associate the gym with a happy place. It was amazing!
Someone would walk into the gym in a pissy mood, and by the time they had their workout clothes on, they were a completely change person.
I saw this over and over, and still saw it last night in the gym.
The really cool thing is, others in the advanced class have started copying me, and now we have the powerhouse of a fun, positive environment.
The advanced class at StoneWay CrossFit is literally a “happy place” for those that train at that time.
The next stepLike I said earlier, we have deemed StoneWay Crossfit in Seattle a complaint free zone.
At our last coaches meeting I asked if people with give me their buy-in on trying this, and everyone agreed to help me, and those around us to keep the gym as a complaint free zone.
Have we been perfect (or even good at it). Maybe not. BUT, we are calling attention to people’s complaints, so they are aware of them.
I really believe that most peoples complaints come from a place that is linked to a feeling that doesn’t feel good inside them. Think about it the next time you complain.
When I complain, it’s a satisfying feeling, but I can tell it’s not a positive satisfaction.
Try this for yourself, but be ready for a battle. I had to work really hard at this for months, but now that I have the momentum, IT’S SOOOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!!!
It’s really amazing that I didn’t realize this earlier.

The short answer is, no. You don’t really need sports supplements.
BUT, and it’s a big but, I believe that you will get a boost from taking the right sports supplements, and improve faster.
What are the best sports supplements for CrossFitters? * Amino acids – Must be complete amino acids. I only take PerfectAminos. * Creatine – These days, it seems like a high quality Creatine Monohydrate is the best way to go. Lots of companies try to get too creative with their creatine, and it just doesn’t matter. * Caffein or Pre-workout – Having taken a lot of pre-workout supplements, and going over 1.5 years without talking any caffeinated anything, I can tell you that a high quality pre-workout product will, without a doubt, boost your performance. * Multi-vitamin – I do believe that it’s hard to get all of the vitamins and minerals that we need from food these days. That’s why I recommend taking a high quality multi-vitamin (or green supplement), about 5 days a week. * Other – Every person will have personalized supplements, or foods that they should be taking. But you won’t know what these are unless you’re doing a blood testing program such as InsideTracker.
Do weight loss supplements work? * They don’t work the way people want them to work.
What I mean by this is… People want to take a supplement and have the weight melt off them faster than they worked to get it on them. And this just isn’t going to happen, and franking I’m very happy that it can’t happen.
But, what weight loss supplements can do, is give you the motivation to get moving (aka work out), and make the workout(s) seem less stressful.
What you need to avoid thinking… You need to avoid thinking that you cannot get gains without taking sports supplements. All sports supplements should be cycled on and off. And when you’re on an off cycle there is no reason that you can’t still get gains.
Sports supplements are simply a tool.

This topic has been stoked by a listener question, and I’m happy that it has come up.
Scott O. asks…– Everyone keeps dodging my question: If you aren’t an athlete competing under the sanctions of a governing body, why not take supplements like HGH, performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), etc…
With there being so much talk of PED use in sports these days, and on the tails of CrossFit Games superstar Ricky Garard getting popped for taking PEDs, after finishing 3rd at the 2017 Games, I feel like this is an interesting topic to discuss.
And, we really need to bring the topic of performance enhancing drugs into the light.
By asking questions like…
Why would people use them, where are they getting them, how are they different from other supplements that you can get on Amazon.com.
I would also like to note… PEDs stands for Performance Enhancing Drugs, which covers anything that will improve your performance. When people are talking about PEDs, they are talking about PEDs that are not allowed by sanctioned athletic associations.
These PEDs may or may not be illegal in the eyes of the law, and I am not a lawyer, or doctor trying to sway you to take or not take these drugs. It’s up to you.
However, you should note that PEDs are all around us. Some very common PEDs that people take everyday are caffein, food, creatine, and anything else that you put into your body that increases your performance, AT ALL.
In this podcast I’m going to take Scott’s question straight on, and talk about…
Legality – Are there (or could there be) legal repercussions to taking PEDs…
Accessibility – Where are people getting PEDs…
Health & Longevity – Are PEDs healthy…
Performance – Do PEDs actually work…
Common (legal) PEDs – Caffein – Creatine – Food

This is another session of listener questions. If you want your questions answered on the allaroundjoe podcast, simply ask in the comments section below, or drop me a line on Facebook.
Our first question comes from Scott R. in Mount Shasta, CA.
Question: How do you know what is the best diet for yourself?2 options – 1. Test everything yourself, and make notes about energy, mood, skin, sleep, etc. This is the way that most people go, or they just take advice from someone like me (or a friend), and just run with that. As you might be able to tell, this is not a good way of figuring out what is right for your body.
In fact, I used this method for over 10 years, and found out that I was poisoning myself by eating too much red meat (and other iron containing foods).
So, I know how to run tests, and I read about what’s good for you (and understand it), but I couldn’t tell exactly what was best for me. And, I don’t think that you can either.
What should you do…
2. Use a real testing company (like InsideTracker) This was a life changer for me. It allows you to look inside of your body, and ask it what it needs. Do you see how this could be beneficial?
It is the most beneficial.
You simply go to InsideTracker.com (and use the code allaroundjoe for a discount), then pick your package (I like the Ultimate, because why wouldn’t you test everything…) and select a lab that’s close to your house to get your blood tested. A few days later, you’ll get an email saying your results are ready, and it will tell you exactly what to eat, and what to avoid.
Now, I’m fine with you using a company other than InsideTracker, although I’m not aware of any companies that make the results as easy to understand. I just want you to understand that you cannot find a diet that works for you 100% in a magazine.
The one thing that you’ll still have to figure out is macronutrients for your life… and this is going to be based on your activity level, and sport. Checkout my podcast on how to setup your diet for success to figure this out.
This next question comes from Pamela in Queen Anne
Question: What’s more important…getting enough sleep or getting a workout in?This is a great question, and something that I see young parents struggling with all the time.
The simple answer is, you’re going to get more bang for you buck to do a quick, high intensity workout for 30 minutes, rather than get an extra 30 minutes of sleep.
That 30 minute workout will do much more for you than 30 minutes of extra sleep.
Also, if you can wake up 30 minutes earlier, and do that workout in the morning, you’ll probably get the most benefits. It will also keep you from disrupting your sleep if you do the workout right before bed.
Our last question of the day comes from Rae in Ballard Question: I been hearing a lot a buzz about the benefits of fasting, but how should it be approached while doing intense training, like Crossfit?
Let’s start by talking about the different types of fasting.
You have multi-day fasting, single day fasting, and multi-hour fasting.
There are many benefits of fasting – Cholesterol – Blood sugar / insulin sensitivity – Blood pressure
Now, to address the question, which is can you fast and be a CrossFit athlete.
You will have a pretty hard time with the longer duration fasting programs when doing high intensity workouts. You body simply needs food to perform at a high level.
That being said, you can utilize short-term fasting to your benefit, even as a CrossFit athlete.
Some ways of doing this are… – Fast for a few hours after waking. If you do morning workouts, this can be a great idea. Just get ready for your day, and head to the gym without eating. — You can also do this if you workout in the evening, just try to delay your first feeding until lunch time. – Lastly, you can utilize fasting on your days off from the gym. I will do this commonly on Sunday’s, where I’ll delay my eating until 1pm or 2pm.
Side note: You should let those around you know that you are testing fasting :-). You might not be in the best mood if you aren’t used to feeling the way fasting makes you feel.
Just remember to think before you speak.

Ben from Seattle asks: – Best way to start training for Half/Full Marathon or maybe short Triathlons while doing strength training? Or should these be done separately?
– Look for a training program that will fit with what you want to accomplish (half marathon, sprint triathlon, etc.). – If you choose a marathon program, the days per week of training will be less than if you pick a triathlon program. — Because the triathlon has swimming, biking, and running, you will usually be doing up to 6 training sessions a week just for triathlon.
What to look for in a training programRunning – Half Marathon/Marathon – I prefer to run no more than 3 times per week. For me, running more than that beats up my joints too much, and doesn’t give me anymore results than 3 times a week. This is true for half marathon, full marathon, or ultra marathon. – A complete training program has a day of linear progression (long slow distance), a day of interval training, and a fun run or fartlek training day. #variety – Doing heavy strength training is the best thing you can do if you want to keep your joints healthy, and muscles able to quickly recover during training. It will also make you feel less fatigued when the running gets hard. You will know what pain feels like, notice it, and just keep moving.
Triathlon – Sprint – Ironman – You will usually have 6 days a week of training. – 2 swim, 2 bike, and 2 running. – Some weeks should have brick training days, where you combine swimming and biking, or biking and running. – There should also be a linear progression with this training. This means that the training distances get slowly longer, which will build up confidence at those longer distances. – Ideally you will also do strength training, or CrossFit during this training, but because of the swim/bike/run load, you will probably have to do some two-a-days. — When I was training for triathlons, I was doing two-a-days four to five times a week. I would do triathlon training first thing in the morning, and CrossFit in the afternoon/evening. It’s a lot of training, and you need to also sleep, and eat a lot when doing this.

Every once in a while I’ll do a podcast where I ask the listeners (you) what they would like to know about, and I’ll bundle a few of the questions into one podcast.
These are always fun for me, because I usually talk about what I’m passionate about at the time of recording, and it’s great to hear what you’re passionate about as well.
Scott asks:– How do you know you’re following the right training program?
Great question Scott, and one that I’ve been pondering for years!
I believe that there is no right training program, unless someone is programing for you directly, and no one else. So, what you have to do is mold the training program you’re following to what you need most to improve.
There are a lot of people out there following the CrossFit Invictus, Misfit Athletes, or Comp Train competition programing, and the truth is, none of these are right for you.
That being said, one or the other might be “more” right for what you need at that time during your training year/life/career. And from there you can add or remove parts of the programing that will better fit your improvement needs.
When you start your training day, take a look at what’s programed, and decide if it makes sense for what YOU need to be working on. And, if it doesn’t, be ok with changing it.
Jacky asks:– The importance of carbs in your training, and how to best utilize them (and where ! ) and which?
Dang Jacky! This question requires a pretty long answer in written form. Make sure you listen to the podcast to get the full story.
Checkout my podcast on how to setup your diet for success by clicking here. This is how I setup all of my nutrition clients when we get started.
In a nutshell, you want to leverage most of your carbs after your workout (assuming you’re only training once per day…).
But, I did say “most”. I do believe that it’s a good idea to have low glycemic carbs mixed into your pre workout meal, which should be about 2 hours before training.
Then, directly after your workout you should have some high glycemic carbs, such as gatorade, banana, or other sugary sources. This is the ONLY time your body will know what to do with sugar, and will shuttle it into your muscles.
For the rest of your day, you should be eating more low glycemic carbs that will keep your blood sugar nice and low. Which will keep you from gaining any unwanted body fat, and hopefully in the fat burning zone.
Linnea asks:– I no longer have any access to any equipment or CF, what can I do to get my fitness on a still get great fat loss results?
It’s pretty interesting to me how often I get this question. And, I realized that it can be much easier, and more fun to walk into a CrossFit gym that’s full of equipment to play with, but the truth is, we really don’t need much to crush workouts.
These days all you really need is to run a quick google search for bodyweight CrossFit workouts, and voila, hundreds of CrossFit workouts that don’t require any equipment.
In fact, here’s a list of 75 bodyweight CrossFit workouts published by Reebok CrossFit One.
The other fun thing to do is… look for things in your environment that you can use for workouts. I’ve been in many situations where all I’ve had was big rocks or trees to lift. And, these are actually more like real life.
Just take a look around your environment, and see what you can come up with.

Every once in a while I’ll do a podcast where I ask the listeners (you) what they would like to know about, and I’ll bundle a few of the questions into one podcast.
In this podcast, we are answering listener questions:The first few questions come from Brady – Is there such a thing as too much protein? The simple answer is, yes. You can overload your kidneys by eating too much protein. The longer answer asks, how much is too much.
Here’s what I have to say about protein. I’ve found that you only need (at the most), 1 gram per pound of ideal body weight. And eating anything more than that doesn’t have much impact.
– Tips for stopping, or minimizing muscle soreness. Here’s my list: eat a great diet that has been vetted by InsideTracker, take PerfectAminos, warm-up property before workouts, stretch after workouts, use the foam roller and lacrosse balls, use VooDoo Floss, do contrast therapy when you can.
– Cheat meal, when you should have them, and when you shouldn’t I believe that if you’re trying to lose weight, you should only have one, three hour cheat window every week, and it must be after a hard workout.
But, if you’re a hard working CrossFit athlete that is doing 1-3 workouts a day, then you can have up to two, three hour cheat windows a week on days that you have hard workouts.
For a more detailed explanation on cheat meals, listen to the podcast.
– The best ways to add active recovery to your workout week. Here are my thoughts. 1. Take calls/emails while going on walks. 2. Ride/row for 20-40 minutes right after your workout, or on off days. 3. Ride, row, or walk over running to lessen impact on joints. 4. Get a treadmill desk :-).

When we get totally consumed by something like CrossFit, or work, or a relationship… there can be a tendency in human nature to push things a little too far.
In one hand, this kinda makes sense. Here are some examples: * You’ve been doing CrossFit for a year, and the results are starting to pour on. Because you’re seeing these great results, you start doing two-a-days. But can your recovery plan hold up to that much training..?
* You hit stride in your work, get a big raise, and start working really long hours. But can your health and fitness, and your relationships be sustained when you work long hours…? Also, are you really getting more results in your work by working the longer hours…
* You get into this great new relationship. The girl/guy is awesome, you think they might be the one. Because when you’re with them, your body releases all of these fun hormones (feelings), you want to be with them all the time. Can this relationship withstand your smothering…?
These are just three major examples that I see all the time.
And, there are definitely exceptions to the rule.
You could have the genetics and recovery systems setup to be able to do CrossFit multiple times per day without overtraining, and ultimately burning out your system.
Or, you could have a relationship where both people are feeling the EXACT same way, and cool with being around each other all the time.
That being said, I have rarely ever seen someone that can pull off working excessive hours without having other parts of their life suffer.
So, if you want to stay away from these overtraining trends, here are 8 signing you can look for in your life.
Oh, and, these 8 signs are going to be directed towards CrossFit and people working out, but you’ll see where you can relate them to my work or relationship examples.
1. You lose your motivation to train, or go to the gym. 2. You have a hard time falling asleep, or staying asleep. 3. Your sex drive is in the dumps. 4. You feel stressed, and irritable all the time. 5. Your performance dips. This usually happens later into overtraining. 6. You have a loss of appetite. 7. You feel sleepy during the day, or times where you should be feeling alive. 8. You’re putting on body fat, or looking softer, even though you’re working out all the time.
When you get yourself into an overtrained state, you will usually see a few of these things materialize. When this happens, take a look at your complete life and daily routine.
Sometimes, all you need is to take a week off from training. Other times, you can add some recovery tools, or nutritional enhancers that will help you recover faster.
But, if you take it as far as I did, you might need to take up to three months off training, and add all of the recovery tools (naps, extra sleep, long walks, supplements, meditation, vacation, etc.).
Make sure you listen to the podcast to get much more incite on all of the overtraining signs.

The post AAJ 102: 8 signs that you might be overtraining (in the gym, or life) appeared first on AllAroundJoe.
When you get excited about starting anything it’s really easy to throw money at things that you don’t really need.
And that’s totally cool unless you’re tight on money.
Even more so, if you pay money for something that doesn’t help you get to your fitness goals, it could completely derail your enthusiasm, and end your fitness journey.
We definitely don’t want that.
So, here are my 5 biggest money wasters by people starting thier fitness journey
Money Waster #1Nutritional supplements – I’m sure you’ve seen all of the pills out there that promise to melt the fat off of your body, or get you jacked in no-time.
Well…
These should only be taken after you feel like you need that extra 1% boost that will propel you forward. There is no such thing as a magic pill to any kind of success (that I know of). It just comes down to hard work.
Money Waster #2A low priced gym membership – You might be like – wait, don’t I want a low priced gym membership?
Not really.
You need to be paying enough money that it will hurt if you don’t get your butt into the gym, and even more importantly, see some significant results.
I remember when I used to work at a big box gym (non-CrossFit), and something crazy like 75% of the members didn’t show up regularly.
And, I’m sure that’s because the memberships were only like $30 a month.
It was probably less effort for them to keep paying the $30 than it was to go to the gym and cancel the membership.
If you’re paying a good amount of money for your gym membership… – You should be getting a very solid experience (like CrossFit group coaching), and that will push you to either go, or get out.
Money Waster #3Any gym membership – Let’s be honest, you need to create a workout habit to get yourself in-shape. If you NEED to pay someone money to force your butt to do this, great. But, otherwise, find some YouTube free workout program, and follow that for a month.
Then, once you’ve developed the habit, go pay some good money for a CrossFit gym.
The key to success is in the habits we create. Period.
Oh, the only thing this doesn’t include is protein bars. There are a TON of terrible protein bars out there, so you need to choose wisely, but having nutrition on the go is better than eating fast food.
Stick with RX Bars, or Quest Bars.
Money Waster #4At home fitness equipment – If you buy at-home fitness equipment before starting a daily habit of working out, you are simply throwing money away.
And I know this because, I’m the one that buys the dumbbells or rower you’re selling on Craigslist that’s in your basement in perfect condition.
Remember, you can easily find a fitness program on YouTube for free that will get you started without any equipment. Or, you could simply start the workout habit by going for a walk every morning, evening, or afternoon. Then, add push-ups 2 days a week. Then, add squats 2 days a week. Then add planks 2 days a week.
There are endless things you can do to get that workout habit created.
Money Waster #5Specialty Fitness Clothes – Again, it’s not bad to buy this stuff, but let’s get that habit started before buying the new fun fitness gear.
In CrossFit, it’s cool to have the new CrossFit shoes, shorts, grips, belts, etc. But, you’d be amazed how much of this stuff ends up in our lost and found, never to be claimed.
The new $200 pair of Nike Romeleos 3’s are awesome, but if you aren’t committed to going to CrossFit at least 4 days a week, just don’t buy them.
You can get really good with the clothes and gear that you already have. Then, when you’re completely hooked, start buying the things that will give you that extra 1% (or less).
