"And this horrible time in Southern California also showed me the importance of community because hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised in GoFundMes to help people I know raise rebuild their homes and trying to regain a sense of normality after the destruction the wildfires caused. And people in my hometown were also making donations of clothes, food and other resources to people in town and students at the various schools who had lost their homes and were undoubtedly feeling a great amount of uncertainty."

"And I think that has, you know, kind of put things not necessarily quite into perspective, but it's definitely become something that I've like had to think about or thought about slightly because I don't come from, you know, a place where wildfires happen a lot and suddenly I'm living in California and you know, I get emails from my campus saying hey, aboard these, these parts of town because there's fires there."

"What this looks like for me is just being able to speak freely and say what I actually feel without feeling judged or without, you know, kind of receiving negative feedback or making me feel ashamed. But I also think that good friends and good family doesn't just listen to everything you say without giving you critiques. And I think that having a support system around me that's constructive and supportive is what's made me feel the most like I belong."

"I feel the most sense of belonging with my five college roommates. We all met like the very first day of school and we always like to tell the story, like a little meet cute to everyone that we meet that we were all paired up as three sets of roommates and we met at this ice cream social thing before classes even started."

And I stick with this, and I maintain that synagogue participation is enriching for this reason, and that is a community I hold dear."

"And this beautiful lesson and the way you learned from your own personal misstep is a lesson we all need to take from this book. That showing up and being present for everybody's sorrow and not just their joy, and sharing these emotional highs and lows within the community is sacred. And I think that's what you talk about in your book in the most personal way. And that's what I love about this book."

"I didn't think too much about it, and I simply sat down and I asked her, hey, what happened? How are you doing? That was all it took. Her eyes welled up and she hesitated for a moment before speaking. It was as if she had been carrying so much inside and just waiting for someone to notice. We talked for a while, and I just listened. I didn't have any solutions or advice. I just let her share whatever she wanted."
