They were just kids.

William (Bill) Compton entered the United States Navy on August 8, 1942 and was discharged on Christmas Day in 1945.

William served as a Coxwain on a landing craft.

A Coxwain is constantly standing as he ferries his troops to shore.

Bill was involved in 10 troop landings, beginning with Sicily and ending with Luzon in the South Pacific.

William joins Molly and Kim in studio today.

Dr. Hanson is a professor emeritus of classics at California State University, Fresno, and is currently the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow in classics and military history at Stanford University's Hoover Institution.
