  • #133: What Does Science Say about Women in Sport? An Interview with Christine Yu

"Even within the male-centric model, women have accomplished incredible feats of athleticism, smashing long-held beliefs about what women can or cannot achieve. Imagine what would happen if everyone had access to better information and guidance." These are the words of Christine Yu, in the introduction of her book "Up to Speed: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes". In this episode of The Appetite, Opal's Director of Exercise+Sport and Co Founder, Kara Bazzi, LMFT talks with Christine about her reflections on the intersection of sport and gender through the lens of her work as a journalist and author. Christine is working to disseminate much needed information (and highlighting the work that is still needed) to better understand gender differences in sport in an effort to support all athletes in their similar and differing experiences.

  • #132: Weight Loss Medications: Are GLP-1 Agonists a Game Changer ?

Dr. Lisa Erlanger returns to the podcast for a conversation with Julie Church, RDN, CD on GLP-1 agonists, medications widely prescribed for weight loss. Through a weight-inclusive lens, Lisa explains GLP-1 agonists history, current use, and side effects with a special attention given to the unique considerations for individuals with current or past eating disorders. Spoiler alert--- these medications are not game changers, bodies still need food and nourishment to thrive! Despite what the shiny marketing says about these being "miracle drugs", safe and long-term weight suppression is not possible.

  • #128: Self-Inquiry Series: I Don't Look Like A Runner Anymore and I Can't Shrink Myself Fast Enough

Dr. Lexi Giblin, PhD and Kara Bazzi, LMFT, Opal Co-Founders, sit down with Poppy and Lily to do a self-inquiry double click on these two particular experiences of shame management. Poppy shares an encounter with shame and disgust where her response is to "mask everything and puff up" while wanting her "old body back." A "deep, profound worthlessness" prompts an urge for Lily to work hard to be likable, meet others' expectations, and "shrink" herself, not just physically. The group does their self-inquiry job and successfully hits on some angsty edges of learning for Poppy and Lily.

  • #127: Changing the Script for More Inclusive Movement Spaces: A Discussion with Meng Wang, RDN, and Ashley Davies

Fitness, movement and sport spaces continue to be saturated with diet culture rhetoric and belief systems that disrupt our innate connection, wisdom and joy to movement and our bodies. Diet culture is rooted in social justice issues where movement and sport spaces are not inclusive of all bodies and walks of life, particularly those who are most marginalized. Yet the story doesn't stop here. More and more folks are recognizing the harmful messaging and practices and are doing it differently! Meng Wang, a dietitian and yoga instructor at Opal, and Ashley Davies, co-founder of Club Seattle Run Division (CSRD) are two of these change-makers– disrupting the "normal" practices in mighty ways! Listen in to this episode of The Appetite as Kara Bazzi, Opal's Director of the Exercise + Sport program, has a conversation with Meng and Ashley that will give inspiration and encouragement that we can all make meaningful change.
